ALDI recalls popular tool due to potentially fatal risks to young children

Being parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents is a wonderful experience filled with love, happiness, and the joy of nurturing the next generation.

It also carries the responsibility of safeguarding the well-being of your beloved little ones, whether they are under your care for a short visit or a longer period.

Occasionally, even the products we purchase from reputable stores can inadvertently put our young ones at risk. It is essential to remain vigilant and informed about potential safety hazards that may arise.

In this regard, we would like to bring your attention to a recent urgent recall concerning a popular ALDI tool. This tool has been found to pose significant dangers, particularly to young children.

According to Product Safety Australia, the Telescopic Magnetic Pick-up Tool with LED, which is part of the Workzone Pickup Tool 2 Piece Pack, has been found to violate mandatory safety standards for products containing button or coin batteries.

One of the safety concerns identified is that the battery compartment of the tool is not adequately secured, which could potentially allow children to access the button batteries. Ingesting these batteries can lead to choking, severe internal burns, or even fatalities.

It is important to note that this specific tool was available for purchase at ALDI stores in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia, and the ACT from 26 November 2022 to 19 April 2023.

To prioritise the safety of consumers, Product Safety Australia strongly advises customers to immediately discontinue using the pick-up tool and store it in a location inaccessible to children. Taking this precautionary measure will help prevent any potential harm to young ones.

For your convenience, we strongly advise returning the affected tool to any ALDI store at your earliest convenience. ALDI will provide a full refund for the Telescopic Magnetic Pick-up Tool with LED as part of their commitment to customer satisfaction and safety.

In case you have any questions, concerns or require further information, ALDI offers various channels for assistance. You can reach out to their customer service team via email at [email protected].

Additionally, a dedicated helpline is available at 13 25 34 during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm AEST. Their knowledgeable staff will be happy to address any inquiries you may have regarding the recall.

In a recent article, we reported that The Reject Shop and Dusk, two retailers, have been fined over $100,000 for supplying products that contain potentially life-threatening button batteries.

This enforcement action was taken by the Australian Consumer and Competition Commission (ACCC) to address the serious safety concerns associated with these products.

Catriona Lowe, the deputy chair of the ACCC, emphasised the extreme danger posed by button batteries, particularly for young children.

According to data, three children in Australia have already lost their lives due to the ingestion of button batteries. It was further revealed that approximately 20 children per week are brought to Australian hospital emergency departments after ingesting button batteries.

This statistic underscores the alarming frequency with which such incidents occur and emphasises the critical importance of preventing access to these hazardous devices.

The safety of our precious grandchildren should always be a top priority, and this recent information serves as a reminder to maintain a vigilant approach towards the products we have in our homes. It is crucial to be aware of potential hazards, especially those that can be accessed by curious little hands.

We strongly encourage all our valued members to remain proactive by carefully reviewing their purchases and regularly staying updated on recall announcements.
