ALDI customer finds steaks locked up in ‘security boxes’ at a local store – and people are gobsmacked

It’s completely normal for every establishment to implement its own set of security measures, but where do we draw the line and deem it too far or downright strange?

After one ALDI shopper stumbled across a drastic anti-theft measure that the retail giant recently adopted, they couldn’t resist sharing their discovery online and it immediately took the internet by storm. The UK customer took to Reddit, revealing that ALDI now sold steaks locked up in ‘security boxes’ to deter thieves.

The shopper included photos of a meat tray caged inside a large locked box. Could this be the beginning of a new norm in ALDI stores across Australia too?

‘My local ALDI has had so many steak thefts that they now put them inside a box approximately eight times their size,’ the shopper captioned their post.

The image sparked mixed reactions among thousands of users.

‘At what point do grocers regress to the old General Store format? You know, like the Wild West days where you hand over a shopping list and an attendant gets it?’ one person asked.

‘How the hell do people steal steaks? Can’t imagine shoving it down your underwear.’ another wrote.

‘Imagine if you wanted to buy a few trays of steak – you would need several trolleys with boxes that big.’ a third pointed out, while a fourth commented: ‘This is insane. Next, the steak will be getting its own security guards.’

‘I would not buy a steak that I can’t clearly see to inspect... Especially from ALDI. No offence to ALDI but if you're a cheap store, I'm checking my meat before I leave.’ added another.

‘That is the perfect environment for mould.’ shared one more.

Others took the opportunity to share several unlikely items that are also locked up at their local stores around the world, kicking things off in the Land Down Under: ‘I saw lettuce with security stickers on them at my local supermarket. I’m in Australia.’

An American Reddit user wrote: ‘The men’s underwear is under lock and key at Walmart and you have to be escorted to the register to make your purchase immediately.’

Another American said: ‘It took me 30 minutes to get a $6 ($8 AUD) pair of false eyelashes at my Walmart the other day. Nothing else other than electronics are [locked] though.’

But one more user argued that people are missing the real hidden issue – they showed empathy towards the fact that people are now forced to steal food, stating: ‘Say it with me, class: if you see people stealing food, no, you didn’t.’

What are your thoughts on ALDI implementing the same anti-theft measure here in Australia? Have you ever spotted a similar drastic way to protect items in your local grocery store? Let us know in the comments!

Coles have had security patches on their steaks for 12 months or more.

I've seen these in various shops for years...when the unscrupulous will stuff $60 steaks down their pants, the shop has to take steps.... and don't get me started on "poor them, they can't afford to buy"... well, when I can't afford to buy steak, I buy a bit of cheap mince or sausages and make what I can afford. Theft is theft!!
