Airbnb Pro cleaner reveals 3 signs to watch out for in rentals

Checking into an Airbnb for your holidays should be a breeze—log in, pick a destination, choose a property, and you're all set!

However, despite the advantages of booking online, such as being easy and cost-effective, one important thing you won't know until you get there is how clean the place is.

Diana Cruz, a 29-year-old professional Airbnb cleaner in the US, left her office job in 2018 and is devoted to ensuring that the answer to the question, ‘How clean is your Airbnb?’ is genuinely, exceptionally clean.

Working alongside her husband, they dedicate themselves full time to cleaning Airbnbs and currently manage around ten clients, each with two or three properties, as verified by Insider.

While Cruz's goal is to consistently leave homes sparkling clean, there are instances where that may not be the case.

Cruz shared three clear signs to watch for when checking into an Airbnb—explaining why they might signal that your place isn't as clean as it should be.

A spokesperson for Airbnb informed Insider that the company upholds hosts to ‘high standards, including cleanliness,’ and ‘hosts who violate cleaning standards may be subject to warnings, suspensions, and, in some cases, account removal.’

In fact, the company has a dedicated resource page on its website dedicated to making homes clean.

Check the bed linens immediately

Upon arrival, prioritise checking the bed linens.

Cruz said, ‘As soon as you get there, look at the sheets. You can easily tell whether they smell good or if they just look like they have not been cleaned.’

Cruz stressed that fresh, clean bedding is most important for an excellent Airbnb experience. She suggests hosts keep a full linen closet for quick bed-making, skipping laundry delays for fresh sheets.

‘That way, we take away everything that is dirty, and you just switch it out with new things,’ Cruz added.

Don't forget the space under the bed

Some of us use the space under the bed for storing things, dust collects, and it becomes a spot for items we don't put away properly.

But having a dirty floor under the bed is a big no-no in an Airbnb.

While you're in the bedroom checking sheets, Cruz suggests peeking under the bed. It tells you how thorough the cleaner was and gives a hint about the cleanliness of the whole Airbnb.

‘Under the bed, if you're finding bottles and all sorts of socks and stuff, that's a big red flag,’ Cruz pointed out.

Inspect the Airbnb shower

Lastly, go to the bathroom and check the shower in your Airbnb. Cruz emphasises that cleaners should pay extra attention to it.

For instance, spotting hairs from the previous guest in the shower or finding shampoo or conditioner residue on the shelves suggests that Airbnb may need to be cleaner.

‘Go into the shower,’ Cruz said. ‘On the edges, you can tell if there are any hairs or anything like that. That's something that a cleaner should definitely be paying attention to.’

Key Takeaways

  • Cruz suggests checking the state of bedding on arrival, noting that clean, fresh sheets are key to a positive Airbnb experience.
  • Examining the area under the bed reveals the cleaners' attention to detail and indicates overall cleanliness.
  • A thorough inspection of the shower, especially its edges, reveals the quality of cleaning, with hairs or residue suggesting inadequate attention.
Members, when you arrive at an Airbnb or hotel, what's the first thing you inspect? Have you taken a look at the three things mentioned above?

I do check these things at motels
I don't stay at Airbnbs, some of them are just ridiculous with their rules and regulations
Anyone would think you were staying at the Ritz the way they carry on.

Fair enough @mylittletibies... some do feel like mini-dictatorships with the way they set rules (not to say rules per se are unreasonable)
