AIBU 10.01.2025

AIBU, which stands for 'Am I Being Unreasonable', is the perfect platform for sharing your thoughts and opinions! So, for today's AIBU discussion, we have this story from Reddit/Online_Weirdo_13:

Am I being unreasonable for criticising my sister's choice of name for her baby?

'My sister just had her first child, a girl, and she and her husband chose the name Isis, after the Egyptian goddess.'

'I politely pointed out that the name is also the name of a terrorist organisation, and that I thought the kid might get bullied or teased for having that name once she goes to school.'

'My sister totally blew up, accusing me of interfering in her life and saying that her daughter's name was her own choice.'

'I wasn't trying to be rude or judgemental, but now I think that I ought to not have brought it up, after all it is her kid, not mine. Am I being unreasonable?'

As her sister and what people recognise ISIS stands for, I think she did the right thing in telling her sister.

Her sister doesn't sound like a very nice person with how she reacted.

I'm wondering if maybe her husband is controlling and it's him who is actually insisting on the name.

My granddaughter's father was insisting she be named Africa, he was from South Africa. My daughter hated it . Just before my granddaughter was born , my husband had surgery and the doctors thought he had bowel cancer . My daughter than insisted called my granddaughter after her dad. He is Vasili she name our granddaughter Vasiliki the femine name. She gets Vas.

Her sad never stayed around . My daughter raised her on her own and to this day she was glad she never named her Africa and now Vas is 17 she is honoured to have the same name as her grandfather
