AFL legend Garry Lyon reveals battle with serious health issues, sparking community awareness

AFL legend Garry Lyon has opened up about his battle with significant health issues, shedding light on his personal struggles.

This candid revelation has touched the hearts of many, highlighting the importance of health and well-being in the lives of athletes.

The story has resonated with fans and the wider community, sparking conversations about the challenges faced by sports figures off the field.

The Australian Football League (AFL) community was recently taken aback by the concerning news that one of its most revered figures, Garry Lyon, faced a serious health scare that temporarily sidelined him from his media duties.

The Melbourne Demons icon, who has become a familiar voice on SEN radio and Fox Footy, was compelled to take a sudden leave of absence due to a health crisis that landed him in the hospital.

At 56, he has been a stalwart of the AFL scene, not just during his illustrious playing career but also as a respected media personality post-retirement.

His absence from the airwaves raised questions and concerns among fans and listeners, which he has now addressed upon his return to presenting.

In a candid revelation, Lyon shared the harrowing details of his condition.

‘I couldn't talk there for a few days,’ he admitted, highlighting the severity of his illness.

‘It’s been a week, one of those weeks…that’s for sure.’

‘I went to day hospital for three or four days,’ the AFL legend continued.

Lyons then recalled the series of treatments he underwent.

‘Just go in and get your intravenous stuff and get out. You just lay in the surgery and get the drip put in and sit there and as soon as it’s empty, get out: that was the negotiation to not go to hospital,’ he narrated.

‘Pneumonia-type lung stuff. Had a couple of health issues going on.’

‘I’m well read on them all … lungs were just closing down quietly,’ Lyons added.

He mentioned that he contracted a secondary virus, which led to him being isolated. Lyon admitted that he might have overexerted himself before becoming sick.

‘I made a mistake, I think, the week prior by working and then flying up to Brisbane,’ he recalled.

For those who have followed AFL, Garry Lyon is more than just a commentator; he's a legend of the game.

His career spanned from 1986 to 1999, during which he played over 200 games for the Melbourne Demons.

His prowess on the field is etched in the club's history, with 426 career goals to his name and the honour of being a five-time All-Australian.

Lyon's recent health struggles echo a similar incident last August when another AFL icon was hospitalised due to a mysterious illness.

This ongoing concern within the AFL community highlights the unpredictable nature of health issues faced by former players and underscores the importance of monitoring and addressing their well-being.
