A whip round
So there was this Roman galley being propelled by fifty slaves gallantly rowing as fast as they could when the galley master began to lash out with his whip against the rowers. A new man asked "why is he doing that we are already flat out" the man who was chained next to him said " it is because someone at the back stopped rowing and he always has a whip round when one of us dies".
