A rare Aussie coin is fetching big money—check your change before it’s too late!

Most loose change is only worth its face value, but every now and then, a rare coin turns up that’s worth far more than expected.

One particular Australian coin from the 1970s has caught the attention of collectors, with some willing to pay a significant premium for it.

Here’s why this coin is considered so valuable and what makes it a sought-after find.

A rare Australian 20 cent coin from the 1970s was reportedly worth up to 400 times its face value, making it a sought-after find for collectors.

Victorian coin collector Michael McCauley revealed that the 1971 20 cent coin could fetch as much as $80 if it was in ‘perfect condition’.

The coin’s rarity was a key factor in its value, with the Royal Australian Mint producing only 8.9 million of them, placing it within the ‘scarce range’.

‘It sounds like a lot, and it’s a fair few, but it’s under 10 million and there’s not many of them around, so it’s in the scare range,’ McCauley said in a social media video.

‘Between five million and 10 million is the scarce range.’

Even coins in well-worn condition could still be worth more than their face value, though they were typically valued at only a few dollars.

McCauley noted that one had recently sold for $80 due to its pristine state.

‘If they are in perfect condition, $80 one sold for recently. If you’ve got one in really good condition, awesome,’ he said.

He added that even those in ‘fairly circulated condition’ could attract interest from collectors because they were ‘pretty hard to find’.

His own coin was not considered highly valuable as it had a minor flaw, with part of the number ‘1’ in 1971 missing.

Certain coins could be worth significantly more due to minting errors or limited production numbers.

The 1966 ‘wavy baseline’ 20 cent coin was one such example, known to sell for between $3,000 and $5,000 when in flawless condition.

Unlike standard 20 cent coins, which had a straight edge at the base of the number ‘2’, the rare version featured a distinct wave along the upper edge.
