McPherson Consumer Products issued an urgent recall of its A'kin Fragrance-Free Mild & Gentle Hypoallergenic Shampoo 225ml over fears of Enterobacter gergoviae contamination which could cause “serious illness”.
Product Safety Australia said that the bacteria can cause a variety of conditions, including eye and skin infections, meningitis, bacteraemia (bacterial blood infection), pneumonia, and urinary tract infections.
“Cosmetic products contaminated with Enterobacter gergoviae may cause significant infection or illness, especially if the user is immunocompromised,” Product Safety Australia said.
The group also said that the impacted batch, AW1B01, was being sold by Chemist Warehouse and Priceline between September 1 and October 11, 2021.
Product Safety Australia advised: “Consumers should immediately stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”
“Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”
