Safety features in modern vehicles are meant to offer peace of mind—but what happens when those very systems come under scrutiny?
A recent development involving one of Australia’s popular SUV models has raised important questions about the reliability of advanced driver assistance technologies.
What has since unfolded has prompted a national recall and an urgent warning for thousands of car owners.
Mitsubishi Motors has issued a recall for 7489 2022-2023 Outlander SUVs in Australia, warning of a potential fault with the steering wheel touch sensors.
The recall only affects Outlander Exceed and Exceed Tourer models, which may have been sold after the original production date.
According to the official recall notice filed with the Department of Infrastructure, the fault is due to a manufacturing defect.
The statement reads: 'Due to a manufacturing defect, the steering wheel touch sensors may be defective.'
The notice further explains that the issue could prevent the vehicle from detecting the driver’s hands correctly, disrupting the MI-PILOT system's functionality: 'As a result, the vehicle may not accurately detect the driver's hands on the steering wheel and the MI-PILOT system may not operate as intended.'
A malfunctioning MI-PILOT system could pose serious safety risks, increasing the chance of accidents: ‘If the MI-PILOT system does not operate as intended it could increase the risk of an accident, causing injury or death to vehicle occupants and other road users.'
Mitsubishi is advising owners of affected vehicles to refrain from using the MI-PILOT semi-autonomous driving system.
They should contact their nearest authorised dealership immediately for a free replacement of the steering wheel.
Owners can reach Mitsubishi’s customer service at 1800 931 811 or via email at [email protected].
