A former Neighbours star is facing sexual assault charges
- Replies 1
A little over a year ago, we were devastated to learn that one of our all-time favourite Australian soap operas, Neighbours, would be cancelled after 35 years on the air.
We clung to every bit of hope that there might be a last-minute reprieve – which, fortunately, there was!
After an outpouring of public support and pressure from long-time fans (including us at the SDC), the executives agreed to grant Neighbours a reprieve from execution.
Production on new episodes is set to resume in April, with the show returning to our screens in mid-2023. We couldn't be more excited!
Unfortunately, we have some less-than-stellar news about one of the show's former stars.
Scott McGregor, who played the popular police character Mark Brennan on and off from 2010 until 2019 (and made a brief return for 2020's 35th-anniversary special), has been charged with one count of sexual assault.
The charge relates to an alleged incident that took place at a seaside pub in St Kilda, Melbourne, in February of this year. McGregor is due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court in January 2023.
We don't know any more details about the alleged incident at this time. McGregor has not commented publicly on the charges.
This isn't the first time the actor has run into trouble with the law.
In a verbal dispute at Hollywood Showgirls in Surfers Paradise in April 2019, McGregor was glassed by a dancer named Danielle Lee, leaving him with a wounded lip.
The prosecution claimed at a hearing on August 20 in Southport Magistrates Court that McGregor was 'intoxicated and verbally abusive' towards the dancer, but the actor disputed these claims. He said that the glass was thrown because he turned down a private dance.
Even though he could not recollect how much alcohol he had consumed, McGregor claimed he was not intoxicated in any way.
It was also revealed in court that McGregor 'has a history of public intoxication and aggressiveness towards women' and that police had previously been called to his ex-girlfriend's home in Melbourne due to his behaviour.
As mentioned, Neighbours is set to return to our screens in mid-2023. It's not yet known whether McGregor will reprise his role as Mark Brennan for the show's revival.
We'll keep you updated on this story as more information becomes available. What are your thoughts on this story, members?
