A 21-year-old woman who ended up living in a retirement complex makes the rounds on social media – “I feel like I’m in Golden Girls”

A 21-year-old TikTok user has taken social media by storm after she revealed that she lives in a retirement village.

No need to take a double look, folks! The woman is indeed living in a retirement home after failing to secure an apartment in the town where she works.

TikTok user @playboylacroix explained that the ongoing housing crisis in the town where she works prompted her real estate advisor to give her an option to rent an apartment in the retirement complex.

As it turned out, however, there are several benefits to having this unique living setup.

And in a video the TikTok user posted, she cited some of the advantages and "little joys" of living in the area.

She says in the clip: “Things that make sense when you live in an old folk’s home.”

"The ladies doing puzzles, the decor, the constant fresh baked goods in the atrium, people casually leaving their doors to their apartment open and leftover food from meals on wheels left at my door.”

The clip comes with a caption, saying: "Yes, I am 21 and signed a lease in a senior apartment complex.”

In a different video, @playboylacroix explained in detail how she ended up living in the area.

She says: “Because of the nature of my job, I need to be at work."

“And I travel a lot but it was impossible to find housing. So this town has a lot of people who come here for that reason, and they had no housing other than low income."

“So they started allowing people to live in their old folks home because it was one of their only rental units that would have openings."

“There’s a tech school in town and there’s a handful of about 3 or 4 people my age that live here, but 90 per cent of the people that live here are still old folks because they live here since before the city bought it and allowed other people to live here."

“It’s still very much an old people’s home – I feel like I’m in Golden Girls.”

The clips amassed more than 1.2 million views in total, attracting the attention of hundreds of users who requested her to do a tour of her apartment, to which she happily obliged.

“When you walk in you just walk straight into my kitchen … It does look kind of old fashion and outdated but I don’t care – I kind of like it,” she says in another clip where she showed off her "70s vibes" apartment.

The woman also reveals that she's into the whole "70s aesthetic", so she gets most of her furniture and soft furnishings from estate sales or postings on Facebook Marketplace.

She also points out that she got herself a record player and a screen in the bedroom rather than getting a television.

Finally, she shows off her "very spacious" bedroom and bathroom, which featured a number of metal support bars that were installed to aid older people to move around the apartment.

A number of users commended the style of @playboylacroix's home, with one person writing: "This looks comforting. it reminds me of how my grandmother used to decorate."

“I miss her dearly. thank you for sharing.”

What are your thoughts on this? Should younger people be allowed to rent apartments in retirement complexes?

Yes why not. I think they need to be vetted but the older people probably like younger people around them as well!

I can see that this could be a win, win situation for the right type of people. So long as any and all old folk are housed first I see no problems. Rather that than let the apartments stand empty and slowly rot.:)

I'd say that as a resident in a retirement village unit, all such villages are regulated to only allow people over a certain age to buy in, generally 55. The only problems we have had in my village is the rare occupancy by a young (usually a relative) who "disturbs the peace" to put a polite term on it. But then again none of our units stay empty for very long, we have a large waiting list.. :D

Thin k of it from the older residents' aspect: young people around them to interact with and befriend! (In reverse, works for the 21 year old as well!)
