8 expert tips to get rid of unwanted weeds from your garden and lawn naturally

Have you ever caught yourself getting frustrated over the weeds that grow through cracks in the pavement, infesting your lawn and garden? No matter how many times you try to get rid of them, these pesky plants just keep growing back?

Well, we've got fantastic news for you!

Organic home and garden brand Safer Brand has shared eight tips to kill weeds growing in your lawn or garden permanently without using chemicals.

Revealing the tips on YouTube, the company emphasised the dilemma of homeowners when it comes to getting rid of pesky plants growing through the cracks in their pavement.

"Pulling weeds one by one is usually the task gardeners hate most. Many homeowners revert to using harmful chemicals to get rid of those pesky plants," the caption of the video read.

So, what are the 8 tips for removing weeds from your garden?

1. Purchase clean seeds and compost

The brand advised to ensure that the seeds you are planting on your lawn are of high quality.

It advised: "Check the label to make sure your grass seed has less than 2% of weed seeds like grassy or broadleaf weeds crop seeds like corn or wheat and inert matter like chaff or soil particles."

2. Make your own natural weed killer

Did you know that you don't need to spend a couple of bucks just to make your own natural weed killer?

Safer Brand said that making a DIY weed killer spray is as easy as mixing two parts kitchen vinegar with one part water and a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.

"Spray the solution on the weed in the morning of a dry hot day," it suggested.

It should be noted, however, that the solution can kill almost any plant it touches so you need to be careful when spraying the DIY weed killer.

3. Salt the weed

Another DIY weed killer that you can easily make using accessible ingredients is the salt spray solution.

The solution can be prepared by mixing 3 tablespoons of salt with a "just enough" amount of warm water.

"Salt kills weeds by causing dehydration," the company explained.

However, one caveat that you should keep in mind when spraying this DIY solution is that salt can actually make the soil barren so you must be careful to only spray it on areas that you don't want any vegetation in like stony paths.

4. Smother weeds with mulch

"Don't throw away the morning newspaper yet! Paper, leaves, straw, or even a black tarp are great materials to use to suffocate your weeds," the brand advised.

You need to make sure that you place enough mulch on the weeds to block out any sunlight.

5. Give your weeds a scalding hot bath

For those of you who are looking to get rid of newly-sprouted weeds, this is the best tip for you!

The brand said that giving young weeds a scalding hot bath instantly kills them as they are not hardy enough to withstand the temperature of the boiling water.

6. Crowd out unwanted weeds

You can easily crowd out unwanted weed growth by keeping your soil's pH level balanced and "not mowing your grass too low".

The company explained: "Growing a densely planted gardener lawn can repress any weeds that might not belong."

7. Use corn gluten for weed prevention

Spreading corn gluten along the cracks on your pavement can keep the weeds from sprouting out of them.

8. Use store-bought weed killers

A number of organic, chemical-free brands of weed killer are available for purchase in the market, we recommend checking out Bunnings or even your local Coles or Woolies should have a few options.

So, there you have it, folks! Will you give these tips a go? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Just done most of my courtyard with salt, vinegar and dishwashing liquid or just salt, water and dishwashing liquid and the weeds are all dead. Have done this for years.

not seeing anything new here. But good for those who have never tried any of these. My grandparents even did these techniques. I'm in my 60s and I've always known these- boiling water, vinegar solution, composting, mulching........

I’ve got a problem with Nut grass coming up occasionally in my concreted edged drive way.And when they Do stick there head up.I try and dig them up roots and all.And then I pour a little bit of two stroke fuel into the area.
