The nominations for the Academy Awards 2023 have been revealed, and this year it’s the action comedy film Everything Everywhere All at Once that is leading the pack with a staggering 11 nominations!

Best actor
Austin Butler, Elvis
Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Paul Mescal, Aftersun
Bill Nighy, Living

Our prediction? Brendan Fraser, The Whale

Sweeping the award season is Brendan Fraser. His recent return to Hollywood has been well-received and widely supported. Could the industry that shunned him for so many years finally offer recognition? It seems likely.

Best supporting actor
Brendan Gleeson, The Banshees of Inisherin
Brian Tyree Henry, Causeway
Judd Hirsch, The Fabelmans
Barry Keoghan, The Banshees of Inisherin
Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once

Our prediction? Ke Huy Quan, Everything Everywhere All at Once

This is perhaps my most confident prediction. Having starred in The Goonies as a child, Ke Huy Quan only returned to Hollywood for Everything Everywhere All at Once. He’s earned himself adoring fans and it would certainly cause an upset if anyone else walked away with this award.

Best supporting actress
Angela Bassett, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Hong Chau, The Whale
Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin
Jamie Lee Curtis, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Stephanie Hsu, Everything Everywhere All at Once

Our prediction? Kerry Condon, The Banshees of Inisherin

This was a tough one but if The Banshees of Inisherin are set to receive an Oscar nod, it’s likely for Kerry Condon’s performance.

Best animated feature
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
The Sea Beast
Turning Red

Our prediction? Puss in Boots: The Last Wish or Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
You can’t go past a story of living life to the fullest that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish captures so well. But eyes are also on Guillermo del Toro's highly-anticipated stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio. With computer-animated films dominating the awards in recent years (decades even), could this be the year for stop-motion to finally take centre stage?

Our prediction? Elvis or The Whale

Historically, overt prosthetics are a shoo-in for both nominations and the award itself. For that reason, Elvis or The Whale will likely take away this award. But it does still leave the question: is this award ‘best makeup and hairstyling’ or ‘best fat suit prosthetics’?

Best original score
All Quiet on the Western Front
Babylon
The Banshees of Inisherin
Everything Everywhere All at Once

A History of the Oscars

The Academy Awards, more commonly known as the Oscars, recognise outstanding achievements in the film industry. The inaugural ceremony was held in 1929, making this year’s event the 95th anniversary.

In a nod to traditional values, the Academy has reinstated the live presentation of eight craft awards, which had previously been dropped. In addition, greater emphasis has been placed on the red carpet preamble, with producers attempting to create a more exclusive atmosphere.

With the help of an experienced host and the reintroduction of craft award presentations, producers are hoping to attract more viewers back to the ceremony. Last year’s Oscars saw a 58% jump in ratings from 2021, the lowest the show had ever seen.

The Oscars remain the pinnacle of success for those in the film industry, and this year’s nominations also highlight the diversity of talent in Hollywood. This year marks a record for the number of Asian actors nominated, and for the first time, an Asian actress (Michelle Yeoh) has been nominated for best actress.

This year’s Oscars will be hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel and will take place on the 12th of March in Hollywood.

Watch this space as the silver screen’s biggest night of the year is fast approaching!

The list seems to go on longer than the Oscar's presentations. Boring.

But you do ask who am I"rooting" for (and I assume you mean in the Australian context, not American, after all SDC is about Australians) I can honestly write that I will willing "root" for Cate Blanchett.

Do I care? .......No! I can't remember the last time I went to the movies or even sat at home and watched one. Maybe I'm getting jaded but none of them seem to light a fire under me anymore, certainly not enough to pay the ridiculous price of a movie ticket anyway.

I love movies, esp certain genres. I'd like to see Michelle Williams and Bill Nighy get up & am barracking for Mrs Harris Goes to Paris.
