📧 The "Fake Tech Support" Scam 🚨

👋 Hello everyone,

Scammers don’t just use phone calls—they also send fake emails pretending to be from trusted companies. Here’s a common scam that could easily trick someone if they’re not careful.

⚠️ The "Your Computer Has a Virus" Email Scam

Imagine you receive this email:

From: Microsoft Support ([email protected])
Subject: URGENT: Virus Detected on Your PC!
Body:
Dear User,
We have detected a severe virus on your computer. Your personal data may be at risk! 🚨
To fix this issue immediately, click the link below and install our security tool:

🔗 Fix Now
Failure to act in the next 24 hours may result in permanent data loss!
- Microsoft Security Team

😱 What happens next?
If you click the link, it downloads a fake "security tool" that is actually malware. This malware steals your passwords and even lets scammers control your computer remotely!

🛡️ How to Avoid This Scam

✅ Check the Sender’s Email – Scammers use fake email addresses that look real. Microsoft will never email you from “m1crosoft-secure.com.” 🚫

✅ Don’t Click Suspicious Links – Hover over links to see where they really lead before clicking. 🔍

✅ Beware of Urgency Tricks – Scammers always try to rush you into acting without thinking. Take a deep breath and verify first. ⏳

✅ Use Real Support Channels – If you think there’s an issue with your PC, go to Microsoft’s official website and contact support directly. 🖥️

✅ Install Trusted Antivirus Software – Use a real security program to protect yourself, not one sent in a random email. 🔒

I got a phone call yesterday but it came up by Telstra "Warning Dangerous Phone Call". First time I have received this message, blocked the number immediately. Good to see Telstra is on the ball. My neighbour also received a similar one.

So did I, on my mobile. Have also been getting calls supposedly from 03 numbers. We do not know anyone in Victoria so those calls are just allowed to ring out. Almost every day we get these calls and the last digit or two seem to vary. Once I tried ringing back to see who would pick up the other end & promptly got the verbal recorded message that the number was not connected, so now we have a look at the calling number & just let all 03 numbers ring out.

Once quite a few years ago, I had a call ‘supposedly’ from NBN asking me to turn on my computer as there was a problem. Funny thing was I was actually sitting at my computer which was turned on & just responded with “sorry, but I do not turn on my computer for anyone.” The guy was a little persistent but I eventually cut him off a few minutes later and never heard from him or anyone genuinely associated with NBN ever again.

when the NBN was rolled out in our area, we kept our old landline number. I use this number when I buy some things on the net. The number is NOT connected to any phone and just has a message asking the caller to leave a message. This keeps scam calls to a minimum on my mobile. As long as you enter a number the computer is happy.

I keep getting suspicious phone calls which are indicated by the 0011 in the front of the number. This is the number you dial before dialling an overseas number to get a direct connection. The rest of the number is an Australian number as far as I can see. I just don't answer these calls.
