“McFitness”, TikTok video shows unusual health-crazed fad in McDonald’s China

We bet you’ve never seen something like this before: one McDonald’s restaurant in China just took ‘healthy eating’ to a whole new level.

Macca’s fans are losing their minds over a viral TikTok video that has surfaced online. The clip, which has been viewed over 34.5 million times, shows a woman inside the fast-food chain chugging down her burger and soft drink while riding an exercise bike.

Pretty dystopian, huh?

TikTok user ‘Cris13yu’ posted the now-viral video on TikTok with the (translated) caption: “McDonald’s in China, I loved the idea”.

The hilarious clip of the fast-food chain gained over 40,000 comments in less than a week, with most viewers saying they were pretty impressed by Macca’s ‘attempt’ to be health-conscious.

“Still more calories consumed than burned,” one user wrote, while another chimed in, saying: “This is like using your phone while charging.”

Some users also pointed out how this activity could actually be ‘bad for the digestive system’, with one saying: “Don’t do physical activities while eating. Eating needs a relaxed state so it can be digested well by the GI tract.”

Another person expressed how the clip reminded them of a dystopian TV series episode, “Black Mirror vibes…” they wrote.

After the TikTok video went viral, McDonald’s confirmed that they were testing out the new in-store feature: The Green Charging Bike.

The fast-food company said that it is currently available for dine-in customers at two locations in China. The Jieyang Wanda restaurant in Guangdong Province rolled out the ‘green’ bikes in September this year, then the New Hualian restaurant location in Shanghai followed suit.

The Green Charging Bikes are said to be designed to inspire more green behaviours from customers while enjoying their fast-food favourites. The bikes generate electricity to power electronic devices such as mobile phones and power banks.

Company leaders say the initiative is part of China’s ‘Upcycle for Good’ project, which aims to create products with plastic parts from recycled materials.

However, if you were hoping to see the charging bikes in Macca’s restaurants across Australia, it’s highly unlikely to happen, according to a spokesperson for McDonald’s Australia.

“We have always encouraged people to enjoy McDonald’s as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle,” they said, and added: “While we have no plans to introduce exercise bikes in our Australian restaurants, we do have bike racks on-site for the convenience of customers on the go.”

Well, there you go, folks! We suggest you just ride your bike there and back if you’re looking for additional exercise.
