“I’ve thought about it”: Isla Fisher spills on possible return to Home and Away
Isla Fisher may have made an impact in Hollywood throughout her career, but Aussies will always remember her fondly for her humble beginnings on Home and Away.

The Australian actress, who is currently a lead in the new Netflix film Back to the Outback, starred in the long-running soap opera from 1994 to 1997, playing the character of Shannon Reed.

And if you are a fan of Isla, then we've got news for you!

The actress spoke to Yahoo Lifestyle about her possible return to Summer Bay and whether she would consider making a cameo appearance in the series.

“Of course I’ve thought about it!” Isla admitted.

“I've thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be hilarious?’ But then the reality of it is, obviously, you have to give lots of notice and then it gets written in and then you have to commit."

“But obviously it would be fun just to sort of like, walk by with a surfboard or something at some point.”

‘I could just sort of let my freak flag fly’

Although the Aussie actress has played the lead role in a lot of popular Hollywood films — including The Great Gatsby, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Now You See Me — and performed with an American accent, Isla said that her latest project allowed her to embrace her roots Down Under.

Back to the Outback is an animated film about a group of Australia’s deadliest animals plotting an escape from the zoo, with the Aussie actress playing a taipan named Maddie who has a heart of gold.

Isla said: “It was so much fun because I could improvise without having to sort of filter it through another dialect, so I could just sort of let my freak flag fly in a way that I hadn't been able to for years.”

The actress also shared her experience voice acting for a character who goes on a journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment.

“Vocally, I just wanted to sort of have a bit of a development and richness to her voice as she grew in maturity and as she sort of developed leadership skills,” Isla explained.

“I didn't need to put on a silly accent like I have done in the past.”

‘Every moment was divine’

Isla gave a glimpse on how she spent her days making the movie in Australia, staying in her own 'bubble' away from her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, who is also filming a new movie.

She laughingly said: “We did it during lockdown so I was able to put on some sweatpants and head up to my closet which was ‘work’ and record this fun character.”

“Claire Knight and Harry Cripps, our directors and writers, they were just so open to any ideas I had as Maddie and they created such a safe space to play around. I just loved every minute of working with them.”

The actress also said that despite starring in a number of Hollywood Box Office hits, there is one movie that stood out the most to her.

“I will always say that for me, The Great Gatsby was just such a special experience,” she revealed.

“Not just to work with Baz Luhrmann, who I'd admired from everything he's ever done, but I think just, you know, building Long Island the way we did in Sydney and just the sets and the scope and the scale and the character.

“That character, Myrtle, was just so different from anyone I've ever played and I got to do so much research. It just was delicious, every moment was divine.”
