A sudden and devastating event has left a small Queensland town reeling, with residents grappling with the loss of a beloved local landmark.
What unfolded on Saturday night has not only changed the town’s landscape but has also sparked warnings from authorities.
They are now urging caution in the aftermath.
A historic hotel in a remote Queensland town was reduced to rubble after a fierce blaze tore through the building on Saturday night.
The Bollon Hotel, the only pub in Bollon—630 kilometres west of Brisbane—was completely destroyed, leaving locals devastated.
Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) arrived at the scene on Main Street at 7:30 pm, but the fire had already engulfed the structure.
‘Firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze, which is producing large volumes of smoke throughout the township,’ QFR stated in a press release that night.
‘Residents in the area should close windows and doors and keep respiratory medication close by if required.’
Despite their efforts, the hotel could not be saved.
Following the fire, the owners took to social media to share their heartbreak and warn locals of potential hazards.
‘We’re sad to announce that the Bollon Hotel burnt down this evening,’ they wrote.
‘We are still in shock and trying to come to terms with it. We are waiting to hear what emergency services can determine but at this stage we are just so very grateful that no one was harmed.
‘Police and fire have asked if everyone can stay well away as the site is very dangerous and asbestos is involved.’
News of the fire sparked an outpouring of grief online as former and current residents mourned the loss of the town’s social hub.
‘What a disaster for the town, losing the hotel is probably the worst thing can happen to a small town,’ one person wrote.
‘I lived around Bollon many years ago and had a lot of drinks there. Let’s hope it can be replaced.’
Another described the loss as ‘so sad’, saying pubs were the ‘cultural hubs for small towns’ and the ‘meeting place for everyone to catch up.’
A third recalled fond memories of the hotel, writing: ‘Devastating for [the] Bollon community. So many memories. Cricket days, birthday parties, drought beers, rain beers and friendship shared at this waterhole. Thinking of you all.’
Others described the fire as ‘bloody awful’, ‘heart breaking’ and ‘terrible’, with many struggling to imagine the town without its beloved pub.
