‘Unusual smell’ triggers Jetstar flight to divert midair

The incident unfolded as flight JQ125 was en route to its destination when the crew detected an ‘unusual smell’.
In response to this unforeseen situation, the Jetstar flight was diverted to Rockhampton 'as a precaution’, according to a spokesperson for the airline.
‘The aircraft landed normally,’ the spokesperson said.
‘Engineers inspected the aircraft, and we’re working to get customers on their way as soon as possible.’
‘We thank customers for their understanding and patience.’
Meanwhile, passengers were provided with refreshment vouchers as a gesture of goodwill for the inconvenience caused by the diversion.
Jetstar arranged for a replacement aircraft to transport the passengers to their final destination in Cairns.
Interestingly, this was not an isolated incident.
Jetstar Flight JQ125, set to depart Adelaide at 7 am on 7 October for Denpasar, Bali, had to return mid-flight due to a malfunction with the onboard toilets.
A Jetstar spokesperson confirmed that the toilets stopped flushing, leading to the unexpected turnaround.
Unable to resolve the issue during the flight, the plane was redirected back to Adelaide, where passengers were transferred to a new aircraft, departing again around 11 am.
Just weeks prior, a Qantas flight from Sydney to Wellington also experienced a similar issue with an 'unusual smell in the cabin’, leading to a priority landing and the involvement of the aviation fire service upon arrival.
In that case, a cabin crew member was taken to the hospital for medical checks as a precautionary measure, highlighting the seriousness with which these incidents are treated.
