‘This is a joke, right?’ Outrageous price for Coco Pops shocks Aussie woman
- Replies 31
Every week we see the soaring prices of grocery items and we can all agree that inflation is only getting more serious. A couple of weeks ago, we reported about a recent price hike of a familiar brand of bread. You can read more about that here.
And now, one woman has found an ‘outrageous’ price increase on an Aussie breakfast staple.
The Aussie visited her local Coles store and was left stumped at a sign promoting a seemingly outlandish deal on a certain cereal.
In a video posted by Lauren Whitney on TikTok, the disgruntled Aussie shopper showed a promotional deal offering two 650-gram boxes of Kellogg's Coco Pops cereal for $17.10.
According to the yellow sticker, a ‘saving of $1.90’ could be made if customers were to buy two boxes, which are priced at $9.50 each. Based on some reports, this is a huge jump in price as a similar-sized box cost $7.50 last year.
‘This is a joke, right?’ She asked in disbelief.
Other Kellogg’s varieties, including Just Right and Crunchy Nut Corn Flakes also cost $9.50 for a similar-sized box.
Additionally, a smaller box of Coco Pops weighing 375 grams costs $7 at Coles. Fruit Loops weighing 285g cost $7, and Frosties weighing 350g are priced at $6.50.
Ms Whitney criticised the supermarket for increasing their prices while many are struggling. In her comments section, she said:
‘The simple fact is that these large companies make billions a year, as does the government from the taxes, while we are down here struggling to get by.’
Hundreds of others also shared what they had to say about the price hike.
‘When did Kellogg’s become a designer brand,’ one quipped, while another joked: ‘I just got mortgage papers for next week's grocery shop.’
‘Rich persons breakfast sweets,’ another claimed.
Another said they saw the same thing recently at their local store and were ‘shocked beyond belief’. ‘When did it get this bad?’
On the popular social media forum Reddit, a similar post went viral. The original poster said they knew that groceries have increased in price, but were astounded at the massive hike.
‘Insane,’ one commented.
Another claimed that supermarkets have ‘realised’ they could hike up prices as much as they like because of inflation. ‘Their profits are what’s driving inflation,’ they added.
‘That’s my biggest problem, people keep saying “oh, it’s just because of inflation. It will ease eventually”, no it won’t,’ one replied. They claimed that supermarkets will ‘keep’ prices at this point from now on.
‘These prices are now the new norm,’ they suggested.
‘1 for $9.50?! WTF. Where is this?’ One asked. The original poster replied: ‘Western suburbs in Melbourne, definitely not regional or rural!’
You can watch Ms Whitney’s video below:
A spokesperson for Kellogg’s Australia released a statement regarding this issue. They said: ‘With food production costs the highest they have been in decades, and the impact of supply chain and inflationary pressures, we recently increased the price of our cereals.’
They added that they sourced most of their ingredients from Aussie farmers and produce most of their cereals in Australia.
‘We believe that Kellogg’s continues to offer Aussie consumers great tasting and great value food. Coco Pops is available in three sizes to suit a range of households and budgets, and is less than 50 cents a serve based on the RRP,’ they explained.
According to a recent study carried out by investment bank UBS, customers shopping at Coles in December last year would have encountered an overall 9.1 per cent price increase compared to when they did their grocery shopping at the start of 2022.
It also comes after experts at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that the cost-of-living crisis has hit a new high, with inflation rising to 7.8 per cent during the last quarter of 2022. This figure reportedly marked the fastest annual pace of inflation since the 1990s, and this might prompt the Reserve Bank of Australia to raise interest rates in the coming weeks to combat further inflation.
