‘Chic’ laundry transformation for just $30 - See how this couple did it!

Home improvement projects can be quite expensive. And in today’s economy, who has the extra cash (or time) to make drastic changes to their living areas anyway?

However, one couple has proved you don’t need to shell out thousands of dollars to transform your space – sometimes all you need is $30.

A savvy couple managed to bring their faded cabinets in their laundry room to life again – and on a budget, too. And it’s all thanks to an affordable $7 product from Kmart.

Sharing before and after images to a popular Facebook group, the laundry cupboards originally were an outdated cream colour. But thanks to their transformation, the cupboards looked more put together and modern.

The couple shared that rather than replacing all the cupboards, they applied sheets of adhesive film to the surface instead.

‘We (well mostly hubby) used the Kmart $7 contact to redo the laundry cupboards,’ Gail (the wife) said. Their overall expenses cost $30 for using about four rolls of adhesive film sheets.

The pair also claimed they’ve been using the adhesive film rolls to update their kitchen benches, coffee tables, cabinets, and shelves.

The DIY home improvement hack caught the attention of many social media users and said the updated cupboards looked ‘fantastic’ and ‘great’.

‘It’s amazing how one little roll of contact can make a huge world of difference. Fabulous,’ one wrote.

‘Great job and I love your laundry. All those cupboards, wow!’ Another shared.

One suggested that the cupboards would look even more stunning if the couple replaced the handles with black straight edge handles.

‘Cabinets now cost a bomb and getting someone in to do a smaller custom job ($8K) is almost impossible!’ One said and pointed out the money the couple saved.

However, others were concerned as to whether the adhesive paper would be impacted by water or humidity.

‘Genuine question. Will that not peel in the laundry?’ someone asked. Gail replied that they were aware of this potentially happening, but they’ve decided to give the hack a try anyway.

One woman confirmed that she didn’t have a problem when she used the same adhesive film hack to her laundry cupboards. She said: ‘Mine stayed on a laundry cupboard for over two years, probably still on it, we sold it not long ago.’

According to the product description from Kmart’s website, the self-adhesive film can be used to upgrade or smooth out walls, furniture, and shelves. It also claims that the product is oil and waterproof.

Its features include several designs, but Gail and her husband look like they bought the ‘white wash wood’ variety. This design gives a rustic feel to your furniture but doesn’t overpower the senses with its faux-wood markings. It is also made from heavy duty thick polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

Aside from being resistant to oil damage and waterproof, it is also heatproof (up to 70°C). Lastly, it’s easy to install – you can make changes to your furniture or walls in a matter of minutes!

However, the retailer did provide a warning:

‘Test in an inconspicuous location and check after 7 days for suitability of surface. While this self-adhesive film has been tested on the recommended surfaces in varying conditions, we cannot guarantee that under all circumstances the material will stay completely intact, that the product will properly adhere to the surface or that no adhesive will remain on the surface when removed.’

Still, this hack seems to be popular among DIY home enthusiasts, as many have been trying it out on their own furniture. You can read some of their home hacks here and here.

To be honest I preferred their old kitchen if those photos are the correct ones.

I think their reno is a temporary one. I can't see the contact staying good for long.

Can I ask a cheeky question ? Is kmart one of the sponsors on here ? I'm asking because I dont see post on Big W, Target ect seems it's always Kmart

I used the dark wood looking one about 30 years ago on my kitchen cupboards. Looked good. Only thing was when we moved out of the rental we had to remove it because it wasn't original in the house. Was the only thing they
had a problem with.
