In March 2023, online content creator Sarah Goodwin took a video of herself moving her mattress to her cabin's balcony, insisting travellers they will 'not regret it'.

Since then, passengers have followed suit, stating it's an innovative way to enjoy outdoor space.

This behaviour, labelled as a 'bad idea' by passengers and cruise professionals, has reignited a debate about cruise ship etiquette.

A recent image of a couple lounging on a mattress on their balcony on a Royal Caribbean Cruise sparked the latest round of controversy in social media.

'Wondering if this bloke got in trouble,' one commented.


Cruise planner and online content creator Mandy voiced her concerns on social media and highlighted the issues of exposing a mattress in the open.

'It rains out there. It gets wet out there,' Mandy said, pointing out that mattresses can’t withstand outdoor conditions.

The risk of high damage from rain, sea spray, and humidity can lead to unpleasant consequences.

'Please be considerate and think of the people that are going to sail after you,' she said.


The concerns go beyond the potential damage to beds.

Hygiene issues may arise for subsequent guests who will use the cabin.

Mandy recounted an incident where a passenger struggled with allergies due to a 'tonne of mould' underneath the mattress, likely caused by a previous guest taking it out onto the balcony.

The debate has prompted questions about cruise operators' policies, such as Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruises, and P&O.

However, as of this writing, companies have yet to comment on their stance regarding the trend or any safety measures in cabins.
