Drivers of SUVs and pick-ups should pay more to be on our roads. Here’s how to make the system fairer

And a nissan patrol? An Isuzu? No. If you are on government benefits registration is reduced for private use regardless of vehicle. you do need to apply for the reduction. An Isuzu mux diesel weighs I think is over 21000 kg a feather weight I don't think they can cost up to $60k plus so if...

Iduzu d max or mu x etc are not designed for suburban run abouts. Europe, especially France is imposing penalties on them.

Don't know where you get this from, if unemployed there are concessions / discounts on registration - many people pay annually; and how often I have heard there are plenty of jobs available. How do you think the jobless manage?

Doesn't mean it is adequate for all vehicles in proportion to the wear and tear. One little thing forgotten is if a vehicle is used to generate income, than that cost is tax deductible against income so yes it is fair for a tradie etc to pay more

That is rubbish, the heavier the vehicle the more damage. Would you like to be hit by a train? Go and review your high school science on topics such as mass and force. The biggest complainers are the ones who don't want to be responsible for their choice of an unnecessarily large vehicle.

I doubt that fully compensates, and it almost certainly should be higher

    1. Roads are built for vehicles. Main highways and most heavy traffic are considerably more heavy duty. However other roads are not built for continual use by unnecessarily heavy vehicle use as their construction is too light 2. You are not towing a caravan every day, and if you have both...

If that was correct there would not be so many large suv etc on the road at school times and in shopping centre car parks. So yes, I did think of that

The government could do something if they had the willpower. The government is the one paying a lot of the costs caused by heavier vehicles

Are you saying they drive 200km daily for bread and milk? I agree about public transport, but frequently there isn't anything reliable. The issue is people using inappropriate vehicles for a non intended use . Europe is starting to charge more for users of large vehicle, though I am not...

So are these vehicles designed for daily city driving? If you can justify a need perhaps some sort of rebate, but why are they needed for shopping and school drop off.

I agree, but suv's and smaller tradie type or off road vehicles are what I was referring to. I commented that most truck drivers are better drivers than the family suv or heavy ute driver or an aggressive driver (who is not a professional driver) in one of these vehicles who often has no need...

No, they are not like station wagons. They are heavier, higher, block the view of sedan drivers, and being higher if they hit a pedestrian are much more likely to cause a fatality. They also use more fuel and need larger wheels and tyres.

Might be me, but on average I find truck drivers better than suv's and similar.

There are proposals to tax electric vehicles. However they produce minimal pollution compared to a diesel or ICE. Very few of the large suv types them are necessary, they are not transporting goods or needed for work, in the event of a crash cause more damage and injury. Why are they needed...

These owners should pay more. They can afford to buy a more expensive vehicle which due to size costs the community more. These vehicles are also more dangerous and cause more injuries. Some of the drivers of these vehicles drive badly forcing smaller vehicles and pedestrians out of the way...

If she wants to share your assets she almost certainly wants to share her debt. What is wrong with the business if she cannot pay off the debt? That business may also have debts, and depending on legal structure of the business, private assets may be used to pay off business debts.
