I recently purchased a few packets of vegetable seeds to plant. On opening one of them it was empty. I wrote to Aldi and they forwarded a letter to be handed to a cashier who refunded the amount.

No you are not being unreasonable at all.

Not everyone feels comfortable giving money, or knows how much to give. I would at least take a card, wine or chocolates, whichever seemed appropriate to the person. I would also offer my help to hand out food etc. and possibly assist in cleaning up afterwards.
