After years of keeping things refreshingly simple with their no-frills approach, ALDI has just made their biggest convenience leap yet. The German retailer's brand-new partnership with DoorDash means you can now have your weekly shop delivered right to your doorstep—and it's about time too.

Why this changes everything for Australian shoppers

This isn't just another delivery option—it's ALDI's first-ever grocery delivery service, marking a significant shift for a company that's built its reputation on keeping things simple and costs low.

The service launched in Canberra back in July, but September saw New South Wales become the final state to join, making the service available nationwide.

What makes this particularly exciting is that over 1,800 products are now available for delivery, including fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, dairy, bread and household essentials.

That's essentially your entire weekly shop, from the everyday basics to those special finds that make ALDI shopping such an adventure.

'Through DoorDash, shoppers can get their hands on ALDI's exclusive range of top-notch products at everyday low prices at the click of a button'

Simon Padovani-Ginies, Group Director ALDI Australia

The Aldify website: viral recipes meet practical shopping

Beyond just delivery, ALDI's launched something rather clever called Aldify—a website that takes those viral recipes we all save on our phones (but never actually make) and turns them into actionable shopping lists.

The website offers free takes on the 'Internet's top viral recipes' and provides the exact ingredient list to take to the supermarket.

The beauty of this system is its simplicity. You can either email yourself the shopping list for your next in-store trip or order everything directly through DoorDash.

It's like having a meal planning assistant that actually understands Australian shopping habits.

What makes ALDI's approach different

Choice quarterly reports consistently show ALDI has the cheapest average basket compared to Coles, Woolworths and IGA, and they're determined to maintain that advantage even with delivery fees.

The supermarket maintains that its low base pricing means it will still be the most affordable option for online supermarket shoppers.

This puts ALDI in direct competition with Coles and Woolworths, who already have established partnerships with DoorDash and Uber Eats for on-demand deliveries. The difference is that ALDI's entering this space with their signature approach: quality products at unbeatable prices.

How the delivery costs work

The price you pay includes item costs, a DoorDash markup, delivery fee, and service fee, all set by DoorDash.

This differs from Woolworths and Coles, who have their own delivery services and can offer free delivery when spending over a certain amount.

However, the price variations are only slight, and when you consider the time and travel costs, it can be worthwhile.

Real shopping habits emerge

The early data from ALDI's delivery service reveals some fascinating insights into how Australians actually shop. Some of the very first orders included practical items like nappies and wipes, and another containing two bags of cat food and toilet paper—proving that convenience shopping for life's necessities is exactly what people wanted.

Everyday essentials like fresh produce, milk and eggs are customer favourites, appearing in about a quarter of all ALDI orders on DoorDash nationally.

Even more interesting: a third of ALDI orders are placed on weekends, suggesting people are using the service to avoid the Sunday shopping rush or to grab last-minute items for the week ahead.

Regional shopping preferences revealed

The data shows some charming regional differences too. Canberrans have developed a sweet tooth for Belmont Biscuit Co. Chocolate Flavoured Crème Wafers, while Queenslanders, Victorians and South Australians all favour Sprinters Corn Chips Cheese Extreme as their snacking staple.

Getting the most value from ALDI delivery

While delivery does add costs, there are ways to make it work for your budget. The key is thinking about the total cost of your shopping trip—petrol, parking, and most importantly, your time. For many people, especially those with mobility concerns or busy schedules, the convenience premium is worthwhile.

Making ALDI delivery work for you

  • Order during off-peak times when delivery fees may be lower

  • Combine with friends or neighbours to share delivery costs

  • Use for emergency items or when you can't get to the store

  • Take advantage of the Aldify website for meal planning

  • Remember that even with fees, ALDI often remains the cheapest option

  • Consider DashPass if you plan to order regularly

One smart approach is using the service selectively—perhaps for your heavy items, fresh produce, or emergency supplies, while still doing some in-store shopping for your regular weekly needs.

The broader competition landscape

ALDI's group director Simon Padovani-Ginies calls the partnership a 'game-changer' in the supermarket industry, and he's not wrong. This move puts serious pressure on Coles and Woolworths, who've had the convenience market largely to themselves.

Money expert Angus Kidman from Finder suggests it will still likely be cheaper going through ALDI despite 'aggressive price matching' from Coles and Woolworths. However, one challenge ALDI faces is substitutions—if an item isn't in stock, it almost never has an alternative brand, so some shoppers may be disappointed.

What this means for the future

DoorDash executives note that 'value and convenience are top priorities for Australians', and this partnership addresses both. It's likely we'll see even more innovation in this space as the major supermarkets compete not just on price, but on convenience and customer experience.

The success of Aldi's delivery service could also influence their physical store strategy. Will we see more ALDI locations in areas that are currently underserved? Will they expand their fresh produce sections to compete more directly with full-service supermarkets? Only time will tell.

Looking ahead: convenience meets value

The rollout of ALDI delivery represents more than just another shopping option—it's a recognition that even the most value-focused retailers need to adapt to changing customer needs. For Australian seniors who've long appreciated Aldi's straightforward approach and unbeatable prices, this service offers the best of both worlds: maintaining those savings while gaining the convenience that makes daily life a bit easier.

As ALDI's Simon Padovani-Ginies puts it, 'We've responded to what our customers have been asking for' - and judging by the early adoption rates, customers are responding enthusiastically.

Whether you're using it for emergency supplies, heavy items you'd rather not carry, or simply to avoid the weekend shopping crowds, ALDI's delivery service opens up new possibilities for how you approach your weekly shop. And with their viral recipe integration through Aldify, it might just inspire you to finally try some of those interesting dishes you've been saving to your phone.

Groceries are only cheaper in my opinion if you can go and get them yourself. I know everyone can't do that I am just thankful that I can and hope it continues for a long, long time. I am not interested in getting anyone else to get my groceries unless it is my daughter or friend because I am sick. I help a friend to go and get hers as she doesn't drive and it would be nice to think others do so for those that need help.

It would be wonderful to have access to Aldi stores, but sadly there are none in the Northern Territory. the only choice is Coles and Woolworths or1 or 2 very small IGA stores

I would love to shop online with Aldi but unfortunately we don't have Doordash in our area. :(

Following surgery I am effectively housebound. Used the Aldi delivery with Doordash twice. Found the service excellent. In both cases the "dasher" (who does the shopping) contacted me regarding proposed substitutes (as I had indicated that an alternative would be suitable) to confirm his selection. Where no substitute was authorised they did not get that item. The account was adjusted each time after delivery due to substitutes or variations (e.g. grapes sold by weight or for out of stock items). Delivery as selected during the ordering process worked for me, we are at an apartment on level 4 - delivered to the door.
The convenience is certainly worth a small fee.

I would never consider using a delivery service, click/collect or some such crap.

Anybody have family or friends to do your shopping for you?

What did you do 15 years ago before this "convenience" came along?

Ponder that one!!!!

Family only available at weekends and when running short used the service. I guess years ago we would be more mobile and also had a larger pantry!
We did not have internet or visacards "years ago" but we all happily pay for them nowadays!

I have health issues and have been ordering for delivery via woolworhs. I prefer Aldi for many brands so I tried their door dash delivery and every thing was great. They subsidised one item for a more expensive one and charged me for the cheaper one. I will be using Aldi regularly now and top up with items i can only buy in woolies occasionally.

I have used the service a couple of times now and have been really thrilled with it. The "dasher" who did my shopping was excellent, chose well, was in touch with me regarding substitutions, and delivered the items promptly. My mobility issues make it a lot more difficult to access stores myself now, and this is an excellent way for me to get the products I like from ALDI.

Love to give it a try - but can't see a door-to-door dash from Whyalla to Tumby Bay (2+hours south).

Be nice, though.

Dear member MeighLeigh, thankyou for your post. Try talking with the manager of the store. Perhaps a once a week delivery arrangement could be made. If more than one customer makes an order, the manager of the store may believe that it is worth the time it takes to deliver the products to the customers. Have a beautiful weekend. 🙏🦋

Sorry, some advances are actually for the good. Not many, but some. People are loosing touch with their neighbours. My family lives 10,000k away. My best friend is currently in hospital after a very nasty fall. I'm sure at least one of my neighbours would happily take me to the supermarket if I needed it - but I really wouldn't like to ask it of him.

I have a friend, L - she actually lives nearly 600k away, so I don't see her often. She has a hereditary metabolic disorder which has resulted in broken bones in one foot + morbid obesity. She can't fit in a car comfortably. Her sister (M, and another friend) lives next door but is even less mobile than she is. Both are a little older than me and most of their friends have either been interred or cremated.
Are you criticising either L or M for using the convenience of having their grocery shopping delivered?

Yes, I prefer to do my own shopping - I like to see what I am buying, choosing to buy Australian Made wherever possible, a bit fussy about my meat, fruit and vegetables. But if I had half the problems L has (or 1/4 the problems M has!)) I would be so glad that the local supermarket delivered!

What a privileged whinger! It is NOT "crap" for those who are housebound and who do NOT have family or friends to shop for them. Instead of being so negative, try being grateful that you are NOT in a position where you need to rely on these services. So "ponder that one", poppet!

Dear member Veggiepatch, thankyou for your post. I respect your post. Dear Veggiepatch, you mention what did people do 15 years ago, before convenience came along. Times have changed. People's health may have declined, people have moved residence, friends and partners have passed away, children have left home leaving the elderly, who may be disabled and in need of assistance. Nothing stays the same forever. What was 15 years ago, has changed so much with more and more chronic diseases, auto immune diseases, with technology and the way people communicate with each other. Some people don't have friends or family anymore, no one lives forever. That's where modern conveniences become a God Send. Wishing you a pleasant weekend. 🙏🦋

Some people might need this, but personally I'd rather do my own collection and delivery 🙂
Whenever I see the people getting the deliveries ready in my local Woolies they don't care about checking dates or how fresh something is. I can spend 5 minutes checking dates and freshness.😁

The only time I had to have home delivery, a couple of years ago, they substituted broccoli for cherries!! 🙄

I realy love doing my own shopping, so using door dash would be a last resort, however it is good to know that this service is available. I went to Aldi to-day and shock horror, they now have only 2 assisted check outs available. So when I was heading to one of the two checkouts (only one was open) with my groceries was feeling very heated, suddenly there was some action and the other one was open and no problem. But I will be keeping my eye on this.

No thanks not for me, DoorDash & a fee? That killed it for me!
I get Woolies delivered fiee

I have seen the Coles and Woolies staff who are picking items for online orders and they are usually just young kids. How on earth do they know what they are doing, as it is, I sometimes have trouble with choices. Its just a job for most of them with no real interest. It`s a bit like a coffee made by someone that does not drink it themselves, got no idea.
