After more than a decade away, the Prince and Princess of Wales are gearing up for what could be their most significant overseas tour yet—and this time, they're bringing the whole family Down Under.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are in preliminary discussions to pay an official visit to Australia, their first in eight years, according to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who added that their three children are welcome to join them.

The proposed 2026 visit would mark a historic moment, being the first time Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have ever set foot in Australia, while Prince George would return as a schoolboy rather than the baby he was during their last visit.

The timing couldn't be more perfect

Palace sources are emphasising that the princess must take her time to fully heal, stressing there won't be a 'big reset button' pressed because of the new year or birthday milestone.

The princess said in September: 'Doing what I can to stay cancer free is now my focus.' This makes the proposed Australian tour even more significant—it would represent Kate's triumphant return to major international duties following her cancer treatment in 2024.

The visit is expected to take place during the UK summer holidays in July or August 2026, ensuring the children won't miss school.

'It goes without saying that Kate and Wills would never leave the children back in London and Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will all be along for the ride. They're currently thinking April or May, given the weather will be just about perfect in most of the country for lots of outdoor, COVID-safe meetings.'

'I would hope that if they visit they would bring their children with them'

Anthony Albanese

The 'republican slayer' returns

Here's something that might surprise you—the royal baby was dubbed by the national press the 'republican slayer' after support among Australians for abolishing the monarchy fell to a 35 year low ahead of their visit. Baby George's charm offensive worked so well that recent polling undertaken since the death of Queen Elizabeth II shows that the majority of Australians are in favor of keeping the monarchy with support for a republican movement dropping 5 percentage points since 2012.

Now 12 years old, George will return to Australia as a confident young man, joined by 10-year-old Charlotte and 7-year-old Louis, who will be experiencing the land Down Under for the very first time.

A family-focused adventure awaits

This won't be your typical stiff royal walkabout. 'A royal tour of this magnitude has never been done before, even by Harry and Meghan who visited in 2018, but they're game—they've been desperate to get back to Australia since 2014.'

'

William has always felt a longing to experience the NSW South Coast, where his mother spent an important summer secretly soul-searching over whether or not she'd accept Prince Charles' proposal.'

The family's itinerary is shaping up to be a delightful mix of official duties and genuine Australian experiences. One of the ideas being thrown around is a visit to Australia Zoo so the kids can meet the wildlife, thanks to William's new pal Robert Irwin.

'Robert and William have been in contact over environmental issues in recent months, and he invited Wills and his family to visit the zoo any time they like.'

Royal visits to Australia: A brief history

1983: Baby William's first visit with Charles and Diana

2010: William visits flood victims in Queensland and Victoria

2014: William, Kate and baby George's successful three-week tour

2018: Harry and Meghan's Commonwealth visit

2024: King Charles and Queen Camilla's recent successful visit

2026: Proposed family visit with all three children

Following in Charles's successful footsteps

The visit carries with it added significance, particularly because it's the King's first trip to a Commonwealth realm since he became monarch two years ago. King Charles and Queen Camilla's recent Australian visit was deemed a great success, setting a positive precedent for William and Kate's upcoming tour.

The timing also aligns beautifully with Kate's gradual return to public life. In recent months, the princess has been gradually resuming activities, including swimming and attending school events and children's sports clubs. True to her well-known passion, she has been spending time outdoors in nature as part of her recovery process.

What this means for Australia

Beyond the royal razzle-dazzle, this visit could provide a significant boost to Australia's tourism industry, which has been working to recover from the impacts of COVID-19 border closures. The list spans everything from environmental issues, frontline workers and fire resources to indigenous communities and showcasing Australia's natural wonders in a bid to draw tourism back to the region after the industry was crippled by COVID-19 border closures.

What to expect from the 2026 royal visit

  • First time all three children will experience Australia together

  • Focus on environmental conservation and indigenous communities

  • Mix of official duties and family-friendly activities

  • Potential visits to iconic locations like Australia Zoo

  • Significant boost for Australian tourism industry

  • Kate's major return to international royal duties

The children's perspective

If they could swing it security-wise, he'd like to take the kids camping. 'Kate is keen to make the trip very child-focused, in terms of the charities and causes she meets within Australia, but also fun for her own kids.' This approach reflects the modern royal family's commitment to giving their children normal experiences while fulfilling their constitutional duties.

The 2014 tour included visits to Sydney, Uluru, and Canberra, and it's likely the 2026 version will follow a similar pattern, though potentially with additional stops to accommodate the interests of three children rather than one baby.

A long-awaited return

This comes after the Cambridges had originally planned to visit Oz in 2020 in the wake of the devastating January bushfires, with William particularly keen to travel to rural areas and visit with heroic firefighters, bereaved family members and survivors. 'William and Catherine instructed their team to make it happen, and it was looking like they'd get the green light from the Queen to come over in April of that year, but of course the pandemic intervened.'

The fact that they're finally making this happen speaks to both the importance they place on the Australia-UK relationship and Kate's remarkable recovery journey.

What This Means For You

The 2026 Australian tour promises to be more than just another royal visit—it's shaping up as a celebration of family, recovery, and the enduring bonds between Australia and the Crown. For Kate, it represents a triumphant return to the international stage, while for Charlotte and Louis, it will be their first taste of Australia's unique charm.

What do you think about the royal family's upcoming Australian adventure? Are you looking forward to seeing how the children react to their first taste of Australia, and what would you most like to see them experience during their visit?

How wonderful if they do come, for young and old alike, I can remember in the 50's standing on the side of the Hume Highway waving my flag at the Queen Mother and her turning and smiling at me, and waving back, the joy on my Little Nanna's face standing near the bottom of the Britanica stairs when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth disembarked and walking just in front of Nan and her sister Aunty Ann, it was caught on camera and wow the excitement of Princess Diana and the then Prince Charles coming after their marriage.........these put a bit of excitement into otherwise dull lives that we live down under lol..........but it also reminds us that we belong to the bigger world also we are part of the Commonwealth.......
