As cloning devices become cheaper and more accessible, experts warn that garage doors may become one of the weakest links in home security. Image source: 7NEWS Australia / Youtube.

High-tech crime is making its way into Australian suburbs, with thieves now using cloning devices to hijack garage doors and break into homes without keys or remotes.

In Melbourne’s west, a Werribee family was left shaken after CCTV captured a gang remotely opening their garage and driving off with their car in just minutes.

How the thieves pulled it off

The footage shows hooded offenders pulling up to the home before the garage door suddenly opens, despite the remote being inside the house. Within moments, they were inside the family’s Nissan X-Trail, rolling it out of the driveway and speeding away.

'All of a sudden, someone (is) into your house,' victim Samrawit Tarkegn told 7NEWS. 'They don’t even have a key. That’s just scary.'

The tech behind the crime

Experts say the gang likely used a signal-cloning device, a tool that can capture and replay garage door codes. These devices, which can be purchased online, allow thieves to gain access without ever touching the remote.

'People need to watch out for somebody who might be sitting in a car that is near their property,' Master Locksmiths Association president Martin Coote warned. 'That’s when these signals are being recorded.'

While the equipment isn’t necessarily easy to use, Coote said the fact that it’s available on the open market is concerning.

'It’s not ideal to have these kinds of products on the market. But they’re not exactly plug and play devices. You do need to have some sort of skill,' he explained.

Protecting your home from hi-tech thieves

Security experts warn that cloning attacks are becoming more common across Australia. Homeowners are being urged to add extra barriers between garages and living areas, and to consider security upgrades.

'You can get things like roller door anchors. Bollards is another thing you could do. It’s about layering your protection,' security consultant Ben Greagen advised.

Practical steps to boost garage security

  • Lock the internal door between garage and home

  • Consider adding roller door anchors or bollards

  • Upgrade to remotes with rolling-code technology

  • Install motion-activated lighting and CCTV

  • Stay alert for cars loitering near your property

Living with the aftermath

For Tarkegn and her family, the violation has left scars that go beyond the financial loss. 'I don’t feel safe. This is my house. I should feel safe with my family,' she said.

Did you know?
Most modern garage door systems now come with rolling-code remotes, which change the signal after each use. Older systems using fixed codes are far more vulnerable to cloning attacks.

What This Means For You

As cloning devices become cheaper and more accessible, experts warn that garage doors may become one of the weakest links in home security.

For families like the one in Werribee, the incident is a stark reminder that even the most ordinary entry points can be exploited by determined thieves.

A generic remote to replicate when we need a replacement is a good idea. But this ideal is now used in a twisted way.

A simple solution to keep that entry point from being accessible at night or while you are home is to attach an interior bolt manual bolt lock.
Entry through garage denied.

The cloning device is on the open market, because honest people need it.
Thieves use it to access honest people's garages - Mirabile dictu! (translated, Wondrous to relate!)
The cloning device is banned from sale in Australia.
Thieves get it through the dark web.
I doubt if there is any electronic security system that cannot be broached by those with technical knowledge and no ethics. Manual systems must also be used. Remembering that some padlocks can be opened by a good smack with a hammer!

Alternatively, switch off the PowerPoint for the garage door when you get home.

Can you get shield boxes for remotes etc? You can for credit cards, passports and the like.

Apparently more than one remote has the same signal. I know somebody whose garage was opened when the owner wasn't even in the area. The car was broken into twice. The 2nd time its door was left open and the battery went flat. They got a professional in to change the signal etc.

We got a deadlock installed between the garage and the house but reading this I think we need to do more. Our remote for the garage sits in the car, I think that might need to change for a start

Why are these items available online?
Surely we can do something about that.

I'd love to see these mongrels try and clone best security tbere is. Yes I do mean the family dog 🤣🤣🤣

A simple device will help you avoid the above problem. It comes with a remote controlled power point that the garage door motor is plugged into. The remote can stay in the car and only activated when the garage remote is to be used. Without this being switched on no power passes through to the door motor.
Another option for those with Grid Connect devices in the home is to fit a remote power point to the garage door controller then this can be switched on from your phone when outside the door and can be shared with other people in the household. Either of these devices will cost no more than $30 from Bunnings.

I think I will investigate this thanks

Then why can't we ban it on the dark web?
I'm sure if a picture of Penny Wongs favourite strap-on was on the dark web it would be removed in quick time.

I don't use a remote control, been there and done that.
I now have two keyed locks on the inside.

This is what is needed using large pop rivets that fit the holes
Place a bolt on both sides of the door on the inside of the garage. A lock can be added but if needed
Switch off the power or they might break the door controllers.

These are available from Amazon... Yes a little bit xxy but it will stop the doors from opening with the controller ...AGAIN ...TURN OFF THE ROLLER DOOR CONTROL MOTOR. (AFTER CLOSING THE DOOR) THEN LOCK THESE LATCHES EITHER SIDE OF THE DOOR....$34 - $38 ... BUT WORTH THE INVESTMENT TO WAKE IN THE MORNING AND FIND YOUR CAR SAFE.
You may find these quality locks in Bunnings tooheavy duty bolt latch.jpeg

We dont own the dark web and it might be hard to get a photo of Penny Wongs favourite strap-on .. she may not have one. Sophie Allouache would not allow her to.

Idiots will sell absolutely anything online they don't care about the consequences.

A strange situation, whenever an aeroplane flew over one unit in a town house complex the garage door would open. It only happened when an unusual approach path that was rarely used but it was an unexpected surprise for the owner. Apparently there was a frequency match with that particular brand of door opener.

In Canberra approx. 1980 + I was welding a blade to the face of a loader bucket using a TIG welder when an official from the airport tracked me and visit me to ask me if I was using a TIG welder without an earth ... I WAS ... so I had to put a 6 foot copper rod into the ground and strap it to my welder.. the only inconvience was the mobility of the welder but it was fixed immediately and immediately I learned why there was a length of copper rod that came with the welder .. The frequency of a Trans-Tig upset the frequemcy of landing airplanes passing over.
