Member's Question: Am I able to get some sort of rebates for repairs?

Hey there, members!

We’re wrapping up the week with another round of our ‘Members Helping Members’ segment: your space to share tips, advice, and a little wisdom with each other.

For today, here's a question from an anonymous member:

Hi friends. Im a disability pensioner. I own my home. The roof is leaking. Well the ceiling is we can't find the leak. I need facia and gutters and down pipes probably a new roof. Before I get people in to give me quotes. Am I able to get some sort of rebates. I'm in Tasmania. Thank you.

Got advice, tips, or experience to share? Comment down below!

If you also want to ask a question or for advice, you can always send yours via our anonymous form or simply post in our Members Helping Members forum!

My best advice would be to contact CentreLink and ask them. They should be able to give you the information you need, and hopefully, a list of CentreLink preferred tradesman.

There maybe a few places that can help you. Try these.

pensioners can receive help with minor house repairs and maintenance in Tasmania through the Australian Government's My Aged Care services, including the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Packages. To access these services, you must first be assessed and then you can apply for support with tasks like fixing uneven flooring, cleaning gutters, and essential garden maintenance.

How to Access Services
  1. 1. Contact My Aged Care:
Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or visit their website at www.myagedcare.gov.au to apply for an assessment.

  2. 2. Get an Assessment:
An assessment will determine your eligibility and the type of support you need for home and garden maintenance.

  3. 3. Receive Support:
Depending on your assessment, you may receive help through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme or as part of a Home Care Package.
Types of Help Available
Services can include:

  • Fixing uneven flooring
  • Cleaning gutters
  • Essential garden maintenance, such as mowing and yard clearance
  • Installing safety items like grab rails and non-slip flooring
Other Potential Avenues
  • No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS):
For certain home repairs, you may be able to apply for a no-interest loan through programs like the No Interest Loan Scheme offered by organizations like The Salvation Army.

  • Home Equity Access Scheme:
You can also contact Services Australia on 13 23 00 for more information on the Home Equity Access Scheme.

If your roof is leaking that will be classed as a homeowner maintenance issue, I don't believe My aged care will pay for those repairs. My insurance company also declined covering those repairs, unless it was caused by storm damage. They will however cover the damage to the inside ceiling. Sometimes the excess is more than the repair.
I believe you can get a loan through center link that may help.

I was once told to place an empty ice cream container or similar under a roof drip. It catches the water & prevents it coming through the ceiling. It can be emptied regularly or if you live in a low rainfall area the water evaporates before the next rain.

Qld has Home Assist Secure, usually pays towards labour, and you pay for parts, fixing white goods to blocked drains clean and repair gutters , general maintenance etc. roof check and repair. You need to be 60 or older ,any age if disability and live in your own home or rented accommodation. If you receive Comm gov pension, or benefit you could also be entitled to subsidised assistance.

I doubt very much that there would be any sort of state government or federal government rebate for your repairs to a home that you own and are living in.
According to the Tasmanian Government Concession and Discounts Website, which I have scanned, the only available help that you may get, is a No Interest Loan from the NILS Network of Tasmania Organisation.

No Interest Essential Loan

NILS Tasmania provide small interest-free loans of up to $2,000 for essential household goods and services.

These are non-cash loans; you provide the quote for the product and NILS Tasmania pay the supplier.

Eligibility:

  • An eligible concession card.
  • Those on gross incomes up to $60,000 per year.

To replace all that sounds like a big job.

I had a leak in my bedroom and I got a roofer guy out. Turns out I needed 10 tiles replaced.
A few months before I had my house painted and when he did the second level he cracked a few tiles.

I'm glad the roofer was honest. I thought they would say we needed the whole roof on the gable replaced.

Ended up costing me $500. And he covered the cracks with a special filler until he changed the tiles a few weeks later

Dammit.
I would have done that for nothing if you gave me a couple of those apple pies you cook.

Maybe she could get the work done in stages after she'd paid off previous work loans.
I think that could be possible if she paid back her loans well and on time.

I was expecting for him to say all the tiles on the gable would need replacing and at a cost of around $10,000. This was the only part of the roof tiles left on the downstairs. He seemed like a really honest guy. Turns out my tiles are now really expensive. I wished we kept a few when we did the second story. We had them piled up at our side and someone asked for them so we gave them to them.
