Everyone seems to rave about 'Catcher In The Rye', so, a few years back I decided to read it. It was THE worst novel I have EVER read in my ENTIRE life. I wonder if those people who carry on about it, have ACTUALLY read it? I don't know what Salinger was smoking at the time he wrote this insult to the intelligence, but I want some...then maybe I could write a heap of rubbish like this and hoodwink everyone as he did. And take their money. Luckily I had borrowed it from my local library, so it cost me nothing. Apart from an excruciating migraine. Mark Chapman had this 'novel' in his hand when he shot John Lennon...need I say more?

Did you actually get to the last page? I tried to read it many years ago, too. Couldn't get past p.5. Have the same problem with quite a few celebrated literary prizewinners. Margaret Attwood's Blind Assassin is on my blacklist. I made the mistake of buying it so, having tried and failed 3 times to get to chapter 2, used it for swatting cockroaches. Life is too short for execrable characters in turgid prose. The roaches didn't like it either.
