You’ve queued at post offices for decades—now they’re finally listening to your feedback

Customers walked into their local post office expecting business as usual—but walked out stunned.

The aisles were clearer, the queues were shorter, and the endless displays of random trinkets had vanished.

One Queensland shopper called the change ‘refreshing’—others said they were ‘blown away’ by the transformation.

Australia Post has begun trialling a major revamp across several of its directly managed stores, removing the retail clutter and giving customers a simpler, cleaner layout.

A shopper in Indooroopilly, Brisbane sparked the discussion after posting on social media about the dramatic changes they noticed at their local branch.

‘I simply cannot believe it,’ they wrote. ‘The post office is a post office again; gone are all the non-postal services, the crowded feeling, the $2 shop, and the queues.’

Their post struck a chord, with hundreds of Australians sharing their own experiences of newly revamped outlets.

‘Same for me today. I went to the Brisbane General Post Office (GPO) and was blown away by how pleasant it was to be in there,’ another Queenslander commented.

‘I noticed my local post office had removed pretty much all non-postal related goods, and it's pretty refreshing,’ added a third.

Australia Post confirmed that this was no coincidence—select corporate post offices were indeed part of a national redesign initiative aimed at streamlining the customer experience.

‘In selected Australia Post corporate post offices, we are trialling a simplified and streamlined merchandise range, meaning customers might notice a fresh new look,’ a spokesperson said.

The redesigned stores prioritised easier access to core products, upgraded parcel zones, and fewer distractions from unrelated items.

The goal was to improve accessibility and make the environment more user-friendly, especially for people with mobility issues.

Australia Post emphasised that this trial only applied to corporate stores it directly owned and operated—most outlets across the country are licensed post offices managed independently.

Alongside this revamp, the company also unveiled a separate initiative in June called ‘Australia Post Parcels’—dedicated outlets focused purely on parcel-related services, including digital self-service and fast-track returns.

The refreshed corporate stores, however, are designed to enhance general services with an updated layout rather than introduce a whole new format.

This shift came after earlier innovations like the rollout of interactive, voice-enabled post boxes in Canberra, Sydney and Traralgon, which used smart sensors to encourage people to send handwritten messages to loved ones.

It remains to be seen how widespread the new design will become, but if public reaction is any indication, many Australians are ready for a more efficient, clutter-free postal experience.

While some post offices are getting a much-needed facelift, changes aren’t just happening in-store.

Australia Post has also rolled out a new digital feature aimed at making home deliveries more transparent and easier to track.

If you’ve ever missed a parcel and been left guessing, this update could make a big difference.

Hi dear member Lynnyrose, wow that sounds like quite a crazy postman. You think your postman is strange in his way of delivering mail. Well, never a day goes by that our post man doesn't do wheelies on the back tyres of his motor bike. We would have some neighbours up in the mornings, with their children, waiting to see this Mr Evil Kanival postman, do his wheelies. Only once, did his mail bag slide off his bike. The neighbours did not find that funny, as their mail was in that bag. Lucky for him, the letters did not all fall out of the mail bag. Wishing you a pleasant day, 🙏🦋
That's hilarious but not funny! Imagine if all the mail fell out😖

I think he would have a hard time explaining to his boss how did the mail fall all over the street. All the neighbours believe that he became a postman not so much because he likes to deliver mail, but more so, that he can enjoy his wheely rides on the motor bike every morning. 🙏🦋

I can't speak too highly of the delivery man in my area. All parcels are delivered right to my door. Admittedly we don't have AP Courier, just the local postie, but he is THE BEST.
Agree...mine is terrific too. So friendly and courteous and always roughly on time. He will always bang on door, if closed, and will not leave the parcel if not answered. Great guy!

Stop playing with yourselves. The only guys that think it great are you guys that want it to make money and cut costs. I live in a town where our post office is the best store to browse for kids toys, Computer ink, art supplies Printers and labellers and a cornucopia of gadgets and things that cannot be had without travelling 35 km to Port Macquarie or trying to buy online. I and all the people of our older generation love and sometimes just plain need many things that only the post office sells in our town

My local, Mount Ommaney in Brisbane has had the make-over and is much more pleasing to the eye without all that clutter. That being said, there were three staff members on, only one serving and the other two having a conversation....several minutes before one looked up to acknowledge, by now, three in line waiting. Continued to talk!!
Probably having a meeting to see how they could improve things. It happened all the time in aged care. Big meeting going on for continuous improvement, while the residents who needed help were waiting to be assisted with a meal, fed up with this I got up out of the meeting and was asked where I was going.
My reply, I am going to do continuous improvement and feed the residents their lunch, not sit here talking about it.

We live in the regions & have a combined post office, newsagents, gift store. It's great👍 But..... our postie is hopeless! When we moved here a few yrs ago we noticed our mail was either squashed, left on top of the box or hanging out & wet if it was raining. We ended up "having a chat with him" & he blamed it on the letterbox! So we gave him the benefit of the doubt & bought a bigger wider mouth box from Bunnings. What he suggested. And guess what......the mail is still hanging out of the box & getting wet. He also rides over everyone's front lawn with his motor bike & leaves cut up lawn & mud especially after a down pour. We have started parking our car across the driveway to stop him doing this. It works but is a nuisence. I think he's just plain lazy!! And no pride in his job. So annoying!
Many years ago my Grandmothers postie would be drunk and had some woman helping him out and getting it wrong delivering to wrong addresses, it was a something to see a drunk postie and not long after the residents walking around putting letters in the right place. This was back in the days when posties walked their rounds.

Another time where I was living a heap of letters was found in the local stormwater canal for some reason only known to the postie.

Settle petal. Many here are talking about City and suburbs ones. Here where I am lots of Post Offices are in big major shopping malls so in that instance it would be good if Post Offices just do Post stuff. Ok .

Dear member No1PixieLover, thankyou for your post. I agree with you totally. It is so convenient to be able to do your postal items, and at the same time purchase much needed and much loved other items, at the same place. It's just that other people are expressing their opinions and frustration, regarding not having much space, when lining up for postal service, at their own post office. You are probably one of the few who appreciateres so many important items sold at your post office, primarily as you stated, because of long distant travel issues. Wishing you a pleasant and enjoyable evening, 🙏🦋

My local post office down the road from me has had that layout for years. Probably because it's a business centre post office. The staff are very efficient and the queues move quickly. It's not at a shopping centre though.

When I walked into the Capalaba post office the other day I thought they were moving to a different building as the place was so vacant/spacious. I asked them if they were moving and they said no, just going back to being a post office again. I was a bit sad because I used to pick up some amazing things for Christmas and birthday gifts. This could save me money now 🤣🤣
You're winning!
