Reckless stunt injures baby: 'I heard a scream no mother should have to hear'

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare: a routine drive home turned into a traumatic ordeal, all because of a senseless act of recklessness.

On a quiet Sunday evening, a young family’s life was upended when their five-month-old baby girl became the innocent victim of a shocking fire extinguisher attack.

The incident unfolded as the baby’s father, with his daughter safely strapped in the backseat, stopped at a set of traffic lights on High Street.

Out of nowhere, two teenagers on e-scooters pulled up beside the car.

In a moment that would haunt any parent, they sprayed a fire extinguisher through the open window, filling the car with choking white smoke and powder, engulfing the baby and her father.

The aftermath was immediate and distressing. The father, struggling to breathe, rushed to get his daughter out of the car.

The mother later described the harrowing scene: ‘She was just in shock, her eyes were wide, her mouth was open, and she was covered in smoke.’

The baby was rushed to the hospital, suffering from dry skin, red rashes, and bloodshot eyes that required rinsing with 100 mL of saline.

‘I heard a scream no mother should have to hear her child go through,’ the mother recalled, her voice heavy with emotion.

Thankfully, the baby was discharged from the hospital the next day, but the ordeal is far from over.

The family must now monitor her breathing closely for several days, and the emotional scars will take much longer to heal.

‘I’m still pretty upset, and it just honestly breaks my heart that someone was willing to put her in this position,’ the mother said.

‘If they’re not worried about the safety of a child, what else are they willing to do to someone else?’

The attack didn’t just harm the baby’s health—it also destroyed the family’s new car, pram, and a brand-new car seat that had only been installed the day before.

The residue from the fire extinguisher may have rendered the car a write-off, and the cost of replacing everything is a heavy burden for a young family.

A close friend has set up a GoFundMe page to help them recover, noting, ‘Setting up life with a new baby is so expensive. They do not have the means to replace their car, pram, or baby seat. Although no amount of money can take back the effect this has had on everyone, I’m sure it will make things easier going forward so they can replace everything.’

This shocking incident is not isolated. Police are investigating whether a separate video posted to social media—showing two people spraying what appears to be a fire extinguisher from the back of a bike—is linked to the attack.

Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed anything between 7:30 pm and 8:20 pm on Sunday, or any business owners with CCTV footage, to come forward.

The mother’s plea is heartfelt and urgent: ‘Grow up, stop terrorising people, do good with your life. There’s absolutely no need for this.’

This distressing event is a stark reminder of how quickly life can change due to the thoughtless actions of others.

For many of us in the Seniors Discount Club community, it’s a call to reflect on the importance of looking out for one another and supporting families in need.

It’s also a reminder to stay vigilant—whether you’re out for a drive, walking the grandkids, or simply going about your day.

This is similar idiotic behaviour to the moron who threw hot coffee over the baby sitting with his mum in a park in, I think, Melbourne. What is wrong with people now? I know I'm old, but surely basic care for the welfare of others shouldn't be a preserve of the elderly. These kids are cowards, but, with little chance of being found, they're free to do it again.

Just an aside, it's stated in the article that the young couple 'don't have the means' to purchase a new car, pram or baby seat. It's also stated that the car was new, so surely it would have to have been insured? I just hope bub's okay and some form of justice finds the two half witted cowards.

It may well be insured however they still need to pay the excess (normally around $1,000) plus replacement of all the items (prams etc) in the car - not all (if any) would be covered by insurance. Very costly even if you are insured.

I have been the victim of a very serious act of violence, which I won't go into here. The greatest thing to come out of it was the immediate, and ongoing relief that my children were not involved, even though they were affected by the impact on their mother. I can't even begin to imagine what this child's parents are going through. Christ, I'm getting angry just reading about what these juvenile offenders have done. Something, somewhere is going badly wrong with the way young people, and probably their parents are being/have been educated.

Trouble with what happened with the coffee was a mature man in his 40's... so it is not only kids these days you have to be aware of every one.

if they had a loan on it, they would have had to have insurance before taking it. That. happened with me for one car I had a loan on and the last car - new- 18 years ago, the store told me to contact insurer before I could take it out of the yard.

So where’s the joy in going for a drive with the windows open ( by the way I don’t think it’s stated how far the window was open and, why should he have to justify it anyway) , or going out for a walk with whoever and just going about your day. If there’s no pleasure in just doing ordinary things, the pleasure that’s been taken away by child thugs and some ignorant, menacing adult dumb ass, then we are always living in some kind of fear….. that is not acceptable. The idiots who deemed it a crime to chastise your child with a smacked bum , they are responsible for what is wrong with the youth of today, and it’s high time they took matters back into their own hands by making sure there are consequences, severe consequences, no matter the age, that will have to be paid. It’s really sad when parents are so unable to control their children that they think something must be wrong with them….in some cases it may be….but often there isn’t anything wrong just that they can’t deal with them, so the kids end up having no boundaries and no control over themselves because they’ve always got what they want…….These kids are tomorrows adults, if they can’t be checked when they’re young, then I don’t think they’re goring to have a very bright future. I hope these scary children are not typical of the majority, and if they’re not, I think they soon will be. Authority needs to be given back to parents, and parents need to take it back…
