Are Australia's banking services changing soon? Bank chief reveals monumental changes ahead

As Australians navigate through the digital age, the way people handle their finances could be undergoing a significant shift.

The Australian Banking Association (ABA) has recently shed light on the future of banking in Australia, and it could be a dramatic change, especially for seniors.


With the decline of cash transactions and the rise of digital payments, the traditional bank branch as we know it is poised for a transformation.

ABA Head Anna Bligh highlighted that Australia could be in the midst of the 'biggest transformation in the history of the country', especially when it comes to banking services.

The digitisation of financial transactions could slowly become a new reality for the country.

Bligh sat down with 2 GB's Michael McLaren for a conversation about these changes in Australians' finances.

'We are, as Australians, using less and less and less cash,' Ms Bligh shared, underscoring the profound implications this trend has for the banking sector.

Back in 2007, 70 per cent of all transactions in Australia were conducted with cash.

Fast forward to today, it has plummeted to around 10 per cent.


According to the Reserve Bank of Australia's (RBA) predictions, cash transactions could dwindle to four per cent by 2030.

This decline is not just a reflection of consumer preference but also a testament to the convenience and security that digital payment methods offer.

What does this mean for banks and senior customers?

According to Bligh, the reduced use of cash could alter the role and function of these bank branches.

Visiting a branch to withdraw or deposit cash could become a thing of the past.

This shift could also be evident in the mortgage industry, where 75 per cent of home loans in Australia are being facilitated by mortgage brokers who often provide in-home services.

In response, some banks have been adapting to these changes.


Westpac recently reopened three regional branches in New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania as new Service Centres.

However, instead of traditional teller services, customers need to access SmartATMs for cash transactions.

Additionally, these centres would offer face-to-face support for both retail and business customers, digital banking assistance, lending support and help with scams, among others.

However, the move towards a cashless society has challenges.

Many seniors may have concerns about the security of digital payments, the learning curve associated with new technology, or the loss of personal interaction bank branches often provide.

Another concern could be the accessibility of digital banking apps, as they could be susceptible to downtime.

Banks need to ensure that the shift to digital banking should be inclusive and accessible to all Australians, regardless of age or technological proficiency.

The move towards a cashless society has been accelerating.

For seniors, staying informed about these changes could be the key to navigating these changes.

I call BS on that, 2 hours, $10k, that's $83 dollars every single minute. They wouldn't have that in total sales, let alone just cash.
I tend to agree with BS. Our friends run an IGA. They have 3 full-time checkouts operating. So as to maintain special customer service and employee goodwill, they operate a bonus system for staff. It differs in each area of operation, but ends up being relatively the same outcome in rewards, which include cash and product. They tell me that the checkout operator's bonus is based on throughput, customer pleasantries and cleanliness around the checkout. The absolute best throughput they have had was from one checkout operator during a rush period just before Christmas, and that was a 2 hour shift on the checkout, taking just over $4200.00. We were discussing the cash to card percentage and she told me that it was about 15% cash to 85% card. Therefore the cash to card was about $630.00 to $3570.00. So $630 in 120 minutes is $5.25 per minute. If all three checkouts happened to do anywhere near the same, the cash throughput would be about $15 or $16 per minute. I don't think that Aldi would be doing 6 or 7 times the turnover of the rush period in our friend's IGA. I know how Aldi operators' performances are based on speed through the checkout, and that they do not pack any products, but you can only go as fast as the customer, as they have to pack or remove the items to a packing bench.
On another interesting point, she also told me that the average sale per customer trolley was around $170. This includes all of the very small sales, some of which are a newspaper and an iced coffee. We laughed when she told us that the most spent in one transaction was a couple with two trolleys and two baskets, $1077.00. Apparently, they were heading off in the caravan.
 
We are using less and less cash because a lot of retailers now, won't accept it !!
Plus the fact that people are shopping more online now, due to prices being a lot cheaper.
All part of the agenda to make us a cashless society, so the government has complete control over us !!
This should never happen.
If stores won’t take cash 💰 I leave and go to one that does , when they lose enough business, they will change or go broke.

I think they are making a huge mistake, and that Australians are to going away from cash, with outages and boy there have been some especially in regional areas you can't buy essentials, I remember long ago if you had a pencil and piece of paper or a calculator and cash you could buy what was needed even in blackouts, the tip to digital is nothing more than profit profit profit, 1. don't need armour guard anymore. (lost jobs) 2. need minimal clerkes (lost jobs) 3. BIGGY........don't need the MINT.........need I go on, once the power goes out without backup you are up the creek without a paddle folks and us Oldies know it. God Help Australia because we truly need his help.

WRONG, AGAIN.
Banks close ATMs because of declining use, they don't close them if being used. I know of some in busy shopping centres where they have upgraded the bank branch and added ATMs.

How dumb are you, don't know, but as a person who worked in a bank and knows senior management still, you are totally wrong.
 
Cash is KING. try paying for anything when there is no power or a bank outage. What do we then
use , you guessed it CASH
If there's no power they can't open the register, they will close the shop, and be honest, how often does the power go out for days. You'll live if you can't get your boose for a few hours.

We need both cash and electronic. Children cannot learn the value of money with a card! We have all seen what happens when there is a glitch in the system, no one could access their money. The system should work for everybody, young and old alike.

It is not something that we should be pushed into, I am 75 and my wife 80, she only uses a phone to talk to people, I hope the both of us will not be around when this totally insidious change takes place, it is the 18 -40 year olds that think it's great until something dastardly happens, then "THE SHIT WILL HIT THE FAN", DONT WORRY IT WILL HAPPEN.

Once they control your finances with cashless society bank cost should go down but due to greed they will slowly increase and there will be nothing anyone can do about it

Once fully digitised it is a simple matter to hold your finances hostage if they wiushed you to go or do things in certain direction. Small businesses will suffer, gone will be the days where you could get a few bucks off for cash. Everyone will be forced to pay their surcharges and pointless fees for using digital means. WAKE UP people. Look at China! Do some research, do not just accept what they propose without considering all the Pros and Cons.
