'Data inclusions will also be increasing': What this telco’s $2 to $6 price hike means for you

Telecommunications costs are on the rise again, leaving many Australians wondering how their monthly bills will be impacted.

The latest announcement from one of the country’s largest telcos has stirred up concerns, with changes set to affect a range of mobile plans.

What does this mean for consumers, and why is the company making these adjustments?

Optus, Australia's second-largest telecommunications company, had informed its customers about an upcoming price increase for select mobile plans.

The price hikes, which ranged from $2 to $6 per month, were set to take effect from 4 June 2025.

Some of the affected plans included popular ones like Choice, Choice Plus, and Business Mobile Plus.

Anthony Shiner, Optus’ managing director of customer solutions, explained in an interview with that the increases were necessary to support ongoing investments in the company's network.

Shiner added that these funds would help improve network speed, coverage, and reliability, as well as enhance technology.

‘Any device payments customers are currently paying will remain the same,’ he assured.

Optus also announced that impacted customers would receive clear notifications about the changes via email or SMS.

The telco further revealed that customers affected by the price changes would see increased data inclusions, ranging from 20GB to 40GB per month, depending on the specific plan.

‘Data inclusions will also be increasing so customers can continue browsing, streaming and enjoying their favourite activities on their mobile devices,’ Shiner said.

In light of these adjustments, the telco’s cheapest postpaid plan, the Optus Choice Plus plan, was expected to rise from $52 to $55 per month.

However, Optus’ new rates would still be cheaper than Telstra’s, which started at $65 per month for 50GB of data.

Vodafone’s plans, starting at $39 per month for the first 12 months and increasing to $49 per month thereafter, offered 100GB, or normally 50GB of data.

This price increase followed a similar move in August 2024, when Optus raised postpaid plan prices by $3 to $6 per service.

The telco attributed the previous price increase to ‘increasing costs’ necessary to maintain and provide its network.

In a previous story, we explored how rising costs are impacting other areas of Aussie finances.

Just means a cutback on the mobile A/C. After threatening to close my account with a certain Telco, I got my bill from $364 to $130, plus 2 new phones, plus an inclusion of WIFI internet. Stick it into them..Aussies roll over too quickly.

Why is this an issue for anyone... Albo generously gave us a Tax cut of $5 (in 15mths time) that will wipe out this price rise... and... ANY/ALL other price rises between now and then...
(yes sarcasm)

If anyone votes Labour in the next election...o_O

Electricity, groceries, fuel, gas, insurance, as a matter of face, everything I can think of, has increased in price. Let's not keep doing this for another four years...

Doesn't matter who will be in power after the next election.
Where they promise to cut down on some things, they will put the prices up on something else

The problem is,these major companies have this mindset that they must make a bigger profit than the previous year.
It's all about greed.
Instead of investing in improving services, using some of their obscene profits, they want their customers to pay for it !!

And he is promising more bulk billing doctors, only problem he has to get them to agree to doing that. Will they? I doubt it.
There are probably more doctors employed at clinics and hospitals that holding their own practice.
It's these clinics that have to agree to the bulk billing, not just doctors

Firstly it is LABOR not Labour. Secondly Our election cycles are 3 yrs not 4. Thirdly all of those price hikes are by private companies and the LNP haven’t come out with how they are going to fix this problem. They are just doing what they do best in opposition and that is throw 💩 just like you are doing.

Poor buggers!

The massive "price hike" will mean that Optus customers will have to forego ONE cup of coffee every month.

A cup of coffee is the new Australian currency. A new 400 litre fridge will set you back about CC160 - that is, cups of coffee!
Since you don’t like/drink coffee, what does that mean to you with the new Australian currency?
😉😆🤣

Just like a lot of other large companies thrusting what they want onto the customers and to hell with what the customer wants.

Increasing the data limit is worse than useless to a lot of people in that they do not use the data provided now. Therefore, it could be seen as just another money grab.

As for using the extra funds for improvement what a joke there are enough areas where the current level of service is well below satisfactory, not remote either.

Then you have the new commercials stating how the new modem will help provide better connectivity. We have had one of these new modems, for nearly three years, and the level of connectivity is woeful. This on top of poor NBN speeds means at times we are unable to even connect to a streaming service if at all. Sometimes this also impacts the operation of a mobile telephone service.

So new commercials could be seen as mistruths, additional costs could be seen as a profit margin increase exercise, the new modems could be seen as a way of locking customers into another three years of poor service so as not having to pay for a device that may or may not last the time.

I'd like to know from where the money suddenly appears each time when the election is due, that both sides can pay for extra things which we have been asking for since the last election!!!
