Kmart’s surprise discount trick: ‘It’s always a great day when you are there'

Retail routines often go unnoticed—until someone stumbles across a surprising pattern that flips the shopping game on its head.

One shopper's casual visit to a popular department store took an unexpected turn when she discovered a timing quirk that could mean massive savings for savvy bargain hunters.

What she found has sparked curiosity, debate, and even confessions from former employees.

A Kmart shopper uncovered a bargain frenzy that few knew existed.

Courtney Farrell was casually browsing the Broadway store in Sydney one Friday night when something caught her eye—a clothing rack brimming with significantly discounted items, including fleece shorts.

She posted a video, sharing her discovery with social media: ‘Kmart PSA – biggest discount rack hack? At 7:30 pm at night in Kmart, all of a sudden they put out a 20c rack.’

The items weren’t just discounted—they were slashed to a jaw-dropping 20c.

‘I couldn’t not grab things I didn’t need…because they were only 20c,’ she said, unable to resist the steal of a deal.

She wondered if this was a regular occurrence: ‘Is this a common occurrence? Does anyone know about this? 20c rack? Friday night?’

Her video went viral, racking up over 190,000 views, and many former Kmart employees chimed in with their own experiences.

‘I used to work at a Kmart and every Monday night from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm a team member would go around and do all the marking down on random things to $2 or less,’ one former worker confirmed.

‘Yes, I worked at Kmart one summer and always towards 8:00 pm, they would put all the clearance stuff out,’ said another.

But not everyone agreed on the timing or consistency of the markdowns.

‘As a ex-Kmart manager, there’s no timing to it. We just have to mark down stuff to get rid of it. Each store will also price differently,’ said one ex-manager.

‘The markdowns usually happen during new seasons and we need to get rid of old stock from summer. Other times it is random but majority of the time it’s when a new season is starting,’ another shared.

‘It’s random, it’s when we have time to do markdowns which usually is in the mornings or later at night,’ added another worker.

Meanwhile, bargain hunters shared their own lucky finds.

‘I was there randomly and they dropped $1 electronics so I guess if you’re lucky,’ one person commented.

‘I needed a waterproof speaker for my shower one time, went to the checkout at Kmart and it was only 60c,’ another shopper revealed.

‘I found a bag at Kmart for $7. A week later, I found the same bag for 50c and my mum made me buy all eight and she refunded the other bag,’ said one.

Another shopper summed it up perfectly: ‘It’s normally at a random time on a random day from what I have seen. Luck of the draw. It’s always a great day when you are there and they bring that trolley out.’

In a previous story, we uncovered another shocking Kmart discovery that had shoppers buzzing.

A social media user shared a jaw-dropping experience with Kmart’s exchange policy, sparking a heated conversation online.

Think what Vinnies and the Salvos would do at such a sale.

Clear out whole displays of 50 cent items then sell them at $10 a pop!

Thieving opportunist bastards.
On the whole Vinnies and Red Cross are cheaper than the Salvos. Don't forget they have to pay rent on the shops they use. It makes you wonder how much they make when they have paid their costs. They would have to keep proper financial records and have them audited. Unless they have a qualified volunteer they would have to pay for that too.

I used to be a volunteer manager for Vinnies in WA. All our stuff was donated. It was washed, ironed or steamed, checked for any required mending then put out for sale . Anything obviously from Kmart or Big W was priced at no more than 50c and almost everything else priced at no more than $5. An article had to be something extra special to priced at more than $5, we relied on quick turnover rather than high prices. If an article had been in the store for more than a month it was deemed unsaleable in that area and sent to another store, after two stores it was donated to overseas aid agencies.

As at the end of 2024, the Salvos wholly owned $761 million in property and plant. Of that, almost $154 million is used for housing which generated nearly $10 million in rent.

While exact figures are not available, a fair chunk of the $761 million would be attributed to their stores, so it could be argued that the Salvos pay little or no rent on their stores.

That's just GREED. What will mum do with the extra seven bags? What about punters who genuinely needed a new bag? Fock dem, eh?

Here in WA Vinnies are very expensive! Best bet is Good Sammy's.
