‘It is a very close race’: New poll reveals a shocking election twist

Election season is heating up, and the latest poll numbers suggest a race that’s tighter than ever.

As political leaders gear up for a critical showdown, shifting voter sentiments and key approval ratings could play a decisive role in the outcome.

With the election date announcement imminent, the stakes have never been higher.

With the federal election fast approaching, the latest YouGov poll revealed a dramatic shift in voter sentiment, placing Labor and the Coalition neck and neck at 50-50 on a two-party preferred basis.

This marks a change from the previous poll, where Labor had a slight edge at 51 to 49 per cent, bolstered by its response to ex-tropical cyclone Alfred and support for Ukraine.

Despite the Coalition gaining ground, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese remained the preferred leader, leading Opposition Leader Peter Dutton 45 per cent to 40 per cent.

Election race tightens as Coalition gains ground.

Paul Smith, YouGov’s director of public data, noted that Albanese’s personal approval could be a decisive factor in such a tight contest.

‘It is a very close race but the prime minister has now consolidated his lead as preferred leader and that is significant,’ he said.

The poll showed Labor’s primary vote remained steady at 31 per cent, while the Coalition rose by one point to 37 per cent.

The Greens and One Nation each dropped slightly, falling to 13 per cent and 7 per cent, respectively, while support for independents declined to 8 per cent.

Clive Palmer’s Trumpet of Patriots party remained at just 1 per cent, despite another round of heavy advertising.

Dutton saw an improvement in his satisfaction ratings, with 42 per cent of respondents approving of his performance and 47 per cent disapproving, giving him a net satisfaction of minus five per cent.

Albanese’s net satisfaction dropped to minus nine per cent, with 41 per cent of respondents expressing approval and 50 per cent dissatisfied with his leadership.

The polling results came just as Labor prepared to deliver the federal Budget, expected to show a deficit following consecutive surpluses.

This financial outlook led to speculation that the government might bypass the Budget altogether and go straight to an election.

However, the impact of Cyclone Alfred in Queensland and northern New South Wales delayed Albanese’s plans to visit the governor-general.

With the election required to be held by 17 May, Albanese was expected to call the poll in the days following the Budget.

The YouGov survey, conducted between 14 and 18 March, polled 1,500 Australians and had a margin of error of 3.4 per cent.

In a previous story, we explored Clive Palmer’s latest political push as he ramps up efforts ahead of the election.

With his Trumpet of Patriots party polling at just 1 per cent despite a costly advertising campaign, questions remain about its impact on the race.

Read more to see how Palmer’s bold strategy could shake up the election landscape.

your reply is so worthless. your remark of the rich is riddled with jealousy. the rich are charged tax wich goes to help pay for your expenses. think on before spouting, They are rich because they used their brains and now are entitled to be rich.
What? the wealthier folks pay less tax compared to ordinary workers and they have more opportunity to use taxation loopholes and hide their money in tax havens. Just because people are wealthy doesn`t mean much at all, for sure some have made it on their own, there are also those who make money from criminal activity or handed money by their famiies.

Albanese is "reactive"...and waaay after he should have acted. A case of way too little too late. Thinking only of votes.

Israel, Palestine refugees, Ukraine support, etc.

Dutton is pro-active at least. Acting before or as soon as he should.

I'd rather go to war with Dutton at the helm...and there's a massive chance that war could happen...and soon.
Dutton hasn`t got an original idea at all, where are the policies,? all he seems to do is chase labour around and disagree with everything! He has always been disruptive. At least Albanese has been attempting diplomacy during diplomatic negotiations. Dutton is full of lies, I would not trust him with any leadership role!!

Why are you shouting at everyone.

If we actually got the people we voted for it might be a different story. Abolish preferences. One vote. One value. Adopt the English system, and make candidates put their money where their mouths are.
I like this idea I don’t agree with preferential votes vote for one candidate or party

You certainly know that we are 'living in the promise land', it comes around just before an election. I promise you this and that, after we get into power...lol. Politicians forget what their roll is when they enter their Office, most push their own agenda/ideas/perceived importance and forget the population. Since when does a person on a six figure(or more) salary worry, or have any idea what the population are going through with this 'cost of living crisis'. A vote for the 'minor parties/independants, is a wasted vote... they will never govern however, they are disruptive, devisive and don't offer any alternatives/ideas. Their most common answer to Gov. Bills, is 'we don't agree with that, so we will not support it.' Gov. should govern, our voting system is failing us with 'all the deals having to be done' with what I call, 'the Political Prostitutes. They will 'sell their vote' if they get something. NOW, before I get jumped on, think about it, there has been more 'minority Governments elected' in the last 30 yrs, each time the Country has lost out on many things ie: manufacturing has dimished, exports have been reduce/imports have risen, skills have been lost, costs increasing, debt increasing, infrastructure failing, Gov. assets being sold off. Even the Courts have been 'overturning/blocking' decissions brought in by the sitting Gov., SO, who is running this Country. If the population votes for Lib./Lab. or whoever, most votes wins. If they do a crap job, we throw them out, at least they will recognise that their 'job lasting' will only last if they perform and are held to account. I will admit there are some Independants/Senators, who are currently sitting, they won't be lost, they will be recruited into one of the large Parties however, lets get rid of the 'dead-wood', some of these Teals, Independants, Greens, I haven't heard/seen of them doing anything, or even formulating a Bill and having it pass through Parliament. Snout in the trough, living/showing their perceived importance at family functions and bbq's or the 'massive fanfare at the opening of a new toilet block... somewhere'. It is an on-going situation that we the voting population can force a solution. Get into your 'local Member's face' on every opportunity, when you find him in the local shopping centre (eating a free apple or cup of coffee) with a photographer in tow.

It doesn’t matter, either one will not be able to govern without bowing down to a few independents who will actually have more power with less votes.

Well Dutton and his mob would be bottom of my list. Nothing has changed since Morrison was in charge of them. Same principles, look after the rich and everyone else can pay.
So then the Teals? Well aren’t they funded by some bloke in WA who is I believe very rich so that would have us up the creek without a paddle. Seems one Teal here has voted with Labor if I remember 70% of the time!
