Moms protest widespread demand for kid-friendly plane toilets: 'Can I start a petition?'

Travelling with children can be daunting, and for parents, ensuring their little ones are comfortable and safe is always a top priority.

However, a recent incident involving a mother's plea for 'kid-friendly' plane toilets has sparked a heated debate online, leaving many questioning where the line should be drawn when accommodating young travellers.

While some support the idea, others argue that airlines cannot cater to every individual need.

Victoria Maria Yavny, a New York City mom and social media influencer, took to social media to share her distressing experience aboard a flight where her young daughter was too frightened to use the aeroplane's lavatory.

With over 4.4 million views, her now-deleted video struck a chord with many parents who have faced similar challenges.

'Can I start a petition to make more kid-friendly bathrooms on the plane?' Yavny asked her followers, recounting how her daughter 'held her pee for 5 hours because she was terrified of the bathroom.'

The video, which showcased the influencer and her daughter in the dimly lit, cramped space of the aeroplane toilet, was underscored by dramatic music, amplifying the sense of urgency and fear.

Yavny's daughter's reluctance was palpable as she whispered 'no' to her mother's comforting words.

Yet, the internet's response to Yavny's call for action was far from sympathetic.

Critics were quick to slam the suggestion, arguing that aeroplanes, with their limited space and strict safety regulations, cannot cater to every individual need.

Comments ranged from practical to sarcastic, with one user pointing out that the light inside the lavatory would work if the door were locked correctly, while others lamented the growing trend of 'Nerfing' the world to protect children from every discomfort.

The backlash didn't stop there. Some suggested that parents should focus on acclimatising their children to different environments, including aeroplane bathrooms, rather than expecting the world to adapt to them.

'Can we normalise teaching our kids to not be afraid of toilets,' one commenter remarked.

This isn't the first time a parent's attempt to garner sympathy for in-flight challenges has backfired.

The story echoes a previous incident where a mother was criticised for demanding a fellow passenger give up their window seat for her child.

These stories raise important questions about the balance between the needs of travelling families and the comfort of other passengers.

At the Seniors Discount Club, we understand the complexities of travel, especially for those of us who may have grandchildren.

We recognise the importance of making journeys as stress-free as possible for all involved.

However, we also appreciate the need for practicality and consideration for fellow travellers.

So, what's the solution? Perhaps airlines could consider offering more family-friendly amenities, such as additional support for parents to help children feel more at ease in unfamiliar settings like aeroplane lavatories.

Or maybe it's about finding creative ways to prepare children for travel, making the experience less daunting.

Actually, I can sympathise with this Mum and her daughter. I was quite a timid child, and I would have found plane toilets scary. Seriously, they are weird and noisy and a child might be worried about being sucked down into it! Those little plastic 'booster' seats that you place on the adult seat could be helpful here - they make the gaping hole of a toilet bowl smaller to sit above - and they could just be stored next to the loo itself. A simple and cheap solution. Many adults forget what it's like to be little.

If your child is afraid of a toilet on an aircraft perhaps the choice to fly should be questioned. Airlines cannot pander to the whims & wants of every passenger. It just isn't feasible
But until they get on the plane and go to the toilet you don't know they are afraid of the toilet. It's a bit late by then unfortunately. She does clearly pander to her daughter's every whim instead of calmly trying to sort it. Her phone is not going to sort it, not a solution.

My daughters took the the grandchildren and they in turn their children and are good travellers and have never had a problem with their children and toileting on planes.
So worrying to see fears of such a basic need wherever you are.

I was brought up to go what was called a dunny A hole big enough to seat a cow. Yet we perched and performed because children were resourceful and faced our fears. A lot of today’s little ones are more than a bit over protected.
Feel sad for the little girl though

Too many young ‘Influencers’ today!! Go in with her, if there is a provided child seat put it over the large adult ‘hole’ and hold on to her while she does whatever is necessary. No child seat, then stand in front of her and hold on to her. A mother’s presence in the toilet will help with the anxiety. In the first place, did she take her child to the toilet at the very last minute at the airport before boarding - that would have helped. Closing down the lid BEFORE flushing also helps with reducing the loud noise those toilets make.

Posting your views and an influencer’s photo won’t help because a photo does not talk so the airline has no idea if the photo is real or just an influencer wanting to get on social media. Approach the airline with your concerns and perhaps suggest the child seat options to them. It won’t break the airline’s bank to consider and implement the option.

Having 5 children 6 years apart leaves very little time to molly coddle any of them, our twins hated the toilet and potty training was difficult. we used to sit them on the toilet with a book and the older brothers and sister made a game of it, occasionally my husband would flush the toilet to get them used to the noise. Eventually when they needed to go they went voluntarily. How that child kept it in for 5 hours is beyond me, obviously it was an older child. Parents should not inflict their fears on their children, surely mum could have used gentle persuasion to make her go.
But no, let’s make aeroplane toilets children friendly , maybe add an extra children’s toilet in an already compact aeroplane, what about a children play area complete with video games, or one of those big spiral slides would be good. Stupid, stupid woman.

I travelled on planes with my children many times when they were young. Some were long haul flights.
None of the kids thought anything of using the noisy, cramped, sometimes bouncy “big” toilet. I’d hold onto them so they wouldn’t fall in.

I’ve never heard anyone complain of airplane toilets not accommodating small children, until this article.

Bloody attention seeking “influencers”.
