'Easter is cancelled': Frustrated shoppers vow to avoid premium Easter chocolate

As Easter approaches, Aussies are facing a bittersweet surprise in the form of soaring prices for their favourite festive treats.

What many thought would be a sweet celebration has quickly turned sour, leaving shoppers questioning the cost of tradition.

With beloved Easter goodies climbing in price, the reasons behind this price surge are raising eyebrows.

Aussies were in for an unexpected shock as Easter loomed, with prices for festive chocolate treats skyrocketing.

What was once a tradition of sweet indulgence had turned into a bitter pill for shoppers.

Price tags on favourite goodies like Lindt Gold Bunnies and Cadbury Dairy Milk Eggs had increased by as much as 20 per cent.

This surge in prices sparked frustration across the nation.

One shopper shared her surprise on social media, stating: ‘Easter is cancelled’.

In a video filmed at her local Coles, a social media user @carinanatalie0 expressed disbelief at the price of a 200g Lindt Gold Bunny, now at $18.

She also pointed out a 350g Cadbury Dairy Milk egg priced at $20, with Coles brand mini eggs sitting at $9 for a small packet.

Another video from user @skye.loves captured the Easter egg aisle at Woolworths, showing 250g Cadbury Dairy Milk bunnies for $12 and a 440g packet of Dairy Milk mini eggs for $15.

Reddit was also abuzz with complaints after a shopper noticed the price of Cadbury Caramilk mini eggs at Coles, now $10 for two packs with just 10 eggs each.

A fellow social media user responded: ‘And that’s the discounted price. ColesWorth make it really easy to not eat junk food these days.’

Others took to the platform to share their thoughts: ‘Might be a pretty healthy Easter this year,’ one user joked.

One social media user remarked, ‘Cadbury chocolate is through the roof at the atm, have been avoiding.’

Another suggested waiting for the post-Easter discounts: ‘Yeh I won’t be buying them at that price. Wait until after Easter and buy them when heavily discounted lol.’

The price hike was linked to soaring cocoa costs, which had surged due to crop disease and bad weather in West Africa—the world’s main cocoa producer.

Cadbury acknowledged the challenge, citing ‘record cocoa pricing’ and ‘other high input costs’ for the increased production expenses.

The company issued a statement, assuring customers they were ‘working hard to absorb costs where possible while reimagining how we can bring joy at Easter time.’

They added: ‘This year, we have spent time reviewing our portfolio to have a wide range of Cadbury Easter eggs and bunnies available in a variety of sizes and RRP so there’s something for everyone.’

Despite this, they urged shoppers to ‘shop around for the best value.’

The impact of these price rises extended beyond Cadbury, with Lindt & Sprungli also blaming the soaring cocoa prices.

A spokesperson for the Swiss chocolatier explained: ‘Chocolate prices in the market reflect the increase in cocoa prices. The cocoa price has quadrupled in the last two years.’

‘Therefore, price increases for chocolate products are unavoidable, even though we strive to compensate for higher costs as much as possible through efficiency improvements and cost-cutting measures.’

The damage had already been done: a 200g Lindt Gold Bunny now cost $18, and Cadbury Creme Egg Minis had surpassed $5 in some areas.

Some prices even prompted disbelief: at Coles, a packet of Cadbury Dairy Milk Eggs was priced at $7 or two for $10, while a 160g Kinder Surprise Bunny was $12.80.

Woolworths, attempting to ease the blow, had temporarily dropped the price of a 300g bag of Lindt Lindor Assorted Mini Eggs from $30 to $15.

However, such discounts were expected to be short-lived.

Both Coles and Woolworths reassured customers they were working closely with suppliers to keep prices as competitive as possible.

‘Ingredients play a crucial role in determining prices at the checkout,’ Coles said in a statement.

Woolworths echoed this sentiment, stating they were ‘working to help keep Easter chocolate affordable and accessible’ despite the ongoing cocoa supply challenges.

According to Queensland University of Technology professor Garry Mortimer, the price hike would likely change shopping habits.

‘Ultimately, we’ve seen the commodity price of cocoa, essentially chocolate, skyrocket in the last 12 to 18 months,’ Prof Mortimer said.

‘You’d expect to see retail prices lift anywhere between 10 to 20 per cent,’ he added.

The expert predicted shoppers might start turning away from premium brands like Lindt and Kinder, instead opting for supermarket private-label chocolates or cheaper alternatives.

It's amazing that this year's Easter egg purchases are going to be increased. Due to the fact Easter eggs are made I believe all year round. So increases should be brought in next year. Not this year.

From memory Retailers do their orders in about September. The manufacturers then have a rough idea how many to make.
