‘Not all toilet paper is made equal’: CHOICE’s latest test reveals surprising winners and losers

Not all toilet paper is created equal, and if you've ever regretted a budget buy mid-wipe, you know exactly why quality matters.

While some brands promise luxury-level softness, others barely hold up under pressure—literally.

So, which ones actually deliver? Let’s find out!

Not all toilet paper is made equal, and CHOICE put 30 different products to the test to determine which ones truly stood out.

The consumer advocacy group assessed each toilet paper on four key factors—softness, ease of tearing, resistance to puncturing, and disintegration time.

‘We score toilet paper on four key areas to find which products are the best quality. We test for softness, how easily it tears, its resistance to puncturing and its disintegration time,’ CHOICE household expert Chris Barnes said.

Only four products met the expert recommendation criteria, scoring at least 70 per cent overall and 65 per cent or more in individual tests.

Sorbent 4ply thick and soft took the top spot with an expert rating of 82 per cent and a cost of $0.59 per 100 sheets.

The other recommended picks included Quilton toilet tissue, which scored 76 per cent and cost $0.60 per 100 sheets.

Kleenex luxury quilts aircushion softness followed with a score of 74 per cent and a price of $0.57 per 100 sheets.

Also scoring 74 per cent was Quilton toilet tissue with coconut oil 3ply, which cost $0.57 per 100 sheets.

CHOICE also identified six budget-friendly options as ‘Best Buys’ for their affordability and decent performance, despite not meeting the expert recommendation criteria.

Woolworths Vevelle white toilet tissue 2ply topped the Best Buys list, scoring 78 per cent while costing only $0.19 per 100 sheets.

Coming in second was Black & Gold toilet tissue 2ply, which scored 77 per cent and cost $0.29 per 100 sheets.

Coles had two products on the Best Buys list.

Coles Simply 2ply embossed white toilet tissue scored 77 per cent and cost $0.19 per 100 sheets.

Coles So Soft & Strong 3ply embossed white received a score of 75 per cent and cost $0.30 per 100 sheets.

The final two budget-friendly options were Delsey toilet tissue 1000 sheets and Vevelle white toilet tissue 1ply.

Delsey toilet tissue 1000 sheets scored 70 per cent and cost $0.18 per 100 sheets.

Vevelle white toilet tissue 1ply also scored 70 per cent and cost $0.18 per 100 sheets.

Despite their affordability, CHOICE cautioned that many of the Best Buys performed poorly in the puncture resistance test.

This means some may be prone to tearing during use, but for shoppers looking to save money, that might be a small trade-off.

I have become a compressed roll user. One roll equals 2 normal rolls for the same price.Personally, I don't really care if my loo paper is 3 ply or John Wayne True Grit style, so long as it does the job.
The proof is in the patting or swiping or dabbing.
