In a world where size is often equated with success and satisfaction, one might assume that having the largest penis in the country would be a source of pride and joy.
However, for one British man, the reality is far from the societal myth.
At 40, Matt Barr has opened up about the significant challenges that come with his 12-inch (30.5 cm) endowment, revealing that the grass isn't always greener on the other side.
Barr's journey to self-acceptance has been a long and arduous one.
Sharing his experience on the UK television show This Morning, Barr recalled he first noticed he was different from his peers during physical education classes at school, where his larger-than-average penis made him feel anything but ‘normal’.
The desire to blend in and be like everyone else was strong, but as he grew older, the unique challenges of his situation became more apparent, including the need to tell people he was dating about his predicament.
‘It’s difficult, because it’s not something you really spring on people as a surprise, because it just does scare people away generally,’ Barr shared.
‘But obviously (you can’t be) creepy and bring it up too early. (But) how do you start that conversation?’
According to him, a date he went on turned into a nightmare when he realised he was being lured into appearing in pornography.
Barr said the woman had an ‘ulterior motive’ and wanted him to appear on OnlyFans—a website well-known among adult entertainers, with the intention of making money.
He mentioned it is not rare for people to want him ‘for a selling point for adult work’.
Barr also recalled one instance where he was chucked out of a yoga class due to people thinking he was aroused.
‘I was wearing a very baggy shirt and shorts (and due to the) yoga positions, people just got the wrong idea.’
In an effort to share his story and challenge the stigmas surrounding penis size, Barr is writing a book titled, 'A Long Story: Life with one of the World's Largest Penises'.
He explained that bigger was not always better, saying, ‘Even if it’s beneficial in some ways…there are practical issues.’
‘It’s not what people want, people just want you to be normal when you’re not.’
‘People make fun of you or say you’re a freak,’ he continued.
Barr stated that there were many misconceptions about men with large penises that didn't reflect reality.
‘People think (having a large penis) is more virile, more manly—these are just myths because the people who are bragging about it often aren’t (those things),’ he explained.
He informed host Ben Shepherd that he had considered surgical reduction of his penis size, but it was both risky and expensive, potentially costing nearly $30,000.
‘It’s not done very often. It’s only done normally for tumours and things like that. And in the case of normal function, it’s not common,’ he said.
Barr expressed his desire to discuss penis size to debunk stigmas surrounding it.
‘I don’t see why there’s any difference talking about this and talking about your breasts or any other bodily part…it’s not sexualised. It’s just a fact of life,’ he pointed out.
Interestingly, recent research from the University of Kent shed light on the preferences of women, debunking the notion that 'bigger is better'.
The study, which analysed 265 sex toys, found that girth is more important than length when it comes to sexual pleasure.
These findings aligned with Barr's message that normalcy and compatibility are more desirable than extremity, and another expert’s revelation about penile length.
Researchers found that ‘women don’t place considerable emphasis on large phallus size’.
It's worth noting that according to a 2022 study of international penis sizes, Australian men rank 43rd in the world, with an average erect length of 5.69 inches (14.4 cm).
This placed them ahead of the British average (5.17 inches or 13.1 cm), excluding outliers like Barr.
