1. **Invest in Timeless Basics**
The foundation of a luxurious-looking wardrobe is built on timeless basics. These are the items that never go out of style: a crisp white shirt, a well-fitted blazer, tailored trousers, and a classic trench coat. These pieces can be mixed and matched to create a multitude of outfits that exude elegance and sophistication. Look for quality fabrics and cuts that flatter your figure, and remember, sometimes less is more.

2. **Accessorize Wisely**
Accessories have the power to make or break an outfit. To look expensive, choose accessories that are understated and classic. A leather handbag, a silk scarf, or a pair of pearl earrings can add a touch of class to any ensemble. Remember to keep it simple; one statement piece is often enough to elevate your entire look.

3. **Pay Attention to Fit**
Nothing says luxury like clothing that fits you perfectly. It's worth investing a little extra to get your clothes tailored to your body. A nip here and a tuck there can transform an off-the-rack garment into something that looks custom-made for you. Well-fitting clothes not only look better, but they also make you feel more confident and comfortable.

4. **Choose the Right Fabrics**
Fabrics play a crucial role in how expensive your clothes look. Opt for natural fibers like cotton, wool, silk, and linen, which tend to look more high-end than synthetic alternatives. These materials not only have a better drape and feel, but they also tend to last longer, ensuring that your clothes maintain their luxe appearance over time.

5. **Keep It Neat and Clean**
An often overlooked aspect of looking luxurious is the condition of your clothes. No matter how expensive an item was, if it's wrinkled, pilling, or stained, it will detract from your overall look. Take the time to iron your clothes, remove any lint or pilling, and treat stains immediately. Proper care will keep your garments looking pristine and expensive.

6. **Master the Art of Layering**
Layering is a stylist's secret weapon. It adds depth and interest to an outfit, making it look more thought-out and curated. Learn how to layer different textures and lengths in a way that flatters your body. A lightweight turtleneck under a dress, a blazer over a blouse, or a scarf draped over your shoulders can all add a touch of luxury to your look.

By following these six tips from stylist Nicole Bonython-Hines, you can create a wardrobe that looks luxurious without spending a fortune. Remember, looking expensive is not about the price tag; it's about how you put your outfit together and carry yourself with grace and confidence.

I’ve known about those sort of “tips” since I was young. My mum passed her knowledge onto me. She grew up poor but always knew about style and value for money.

I did indulge in a few “hippie pieces” of clothing years ago as a teen, but that was just a passing phase.

Simple, classic wear always suited me best.

understanding which colours look best on you and which clothing styles suit your body shape as well as always being neat and tidy never goes out of fashion and is more important than the type of fabric that you wear, some very cheap outfits can look stunning as long as they suit you and look as if they were made just for you. Looking the best that you can does not cost a fortune unless you wish it too.
