Be warned about fake text messages

hi there!
We all know about fake text messages but you do need to look carefully at them. I received this text message supposedly from MyGov, a few days ago, on a Sunday. I never "click on the link" so I was on my way to check on my computer when I looked at it more closely. Can you see what gave it away as a fake? Appart from the fact that it has an ! mark (since when do governemnt comms use exclamation marks?), the phone number area code is for Estonia...the URL address has transposed the letters in "gov" to "gvo". Easy to miss at first glance!

best little hint - when receiving these emails or text messages NEVER click/open the hyperlink (normally comes up blue in colour). If you wish to double check (just incase) you go to your trusted webpage for that app/site and login the correct way. I have over 3000+ more blocked sites/apps that my phone/computer checks before they come into my in box. Then at the end of each month I just double quick check & delete everything in my junk box.

We have to keep our wits about us don’t we. I received a bill from Telstra yesterday stating that my last payment hadn’t gone through. Only problem is the bill doesn’t come to me it goes to my husband and they used my old email address. My mobile is still with Telstra but certainly doesn’t cost $299 a month. Hopefully none of us get too senile to spot a fake account.

A ' supposed' MyGov email was in my inbox the other day. My action - immediately deleted. We need to be ultra vigilant these days, as the scumbags are becoming more sophisticated and devious. And yes, the government needs to do much more than it is currently doing.

I've had a few of these - ALWAYS LOOK AT THE EMAIL ADDRESS - it is always something obscure, with no relation to the company/site the request is from. Aything from MyGov would start with your name

I posted couple weeks ago about the Medicare app, where they said my Medicare had been paused and needed $1.00 to reinstate. Reported this as a scam

There was also a text on Sunday from Centrlnk (something like that) but I have deleted it. I got both the MyGov which was in square brackets. Again deleted. If you’re unsure do as I do and login to your MyGov account.
I also had a friend whose Messenger was hacked and then I hit a message supposedly from her suggesting to invest in Bitcoin. Once I spoke with my friend I deleted the whole contact. Then yesterday I received a call about a pending payment on an ANZ access account that referred to bitcoin (I suspect possibly the same person who hacked my friend’s messenger account). I ended the conversation and popped into the bank but it was a scammer as there was nothing on my account. Could have easily been scammed but too wary nowadays. Be careful everyone.

use spellcheck to carecly spel!

I get a few of these from various businesses, generally in blocks rather than on a daily basis.
Best giveaway for me...
* Toll Payment outstanding: I don't drive anywhere near a toll rd, in fact, they're approx 2 hundred klms away.
* NAB, ANZ, Commonwealth Banks - something to do with my account, xays I need to go to it immediately : I don't bank with any of these.
* Medicare - issue with a payment : either I go into Medicare myself or the medical service organises the refund directly to the account from which the payment just left.

There are no doubt others whom I can't recall at the moment but I have a chuckle then instantly 'block' the number. But realistically, we all know that doesn't really work as they always use a different/new number next time.

As iterated by others...NEVER ever open a hyperlink (underlined blue words). It takes so very little to be caught out these days.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS, open your connection to Medicare, Tolls, your Bank through the safer method of putting in the URL (the information that finds the sompany you want to connect to) in the search bar at the top of a fresh Web pages.

And while we're at it, protecting ourselves. Never approve money to a company or send money to a realtive verbally over the phone.
These scammers have gotten so good they are now starting to imitate loved ones voices.
If you get text message from a family member or even a friend saying they've had an accident and need money do be careful. If you do NOT recognise the number, it may not be your family member or friend at all but a scammer instead.
Ask them to call you back in a couple of minutes. In the meantime, you ring the caller on the number you have stored in your phone. This way you can hopefully ensure you are speaking to the right person.
If the family member or friend answers and no nothing of the request then rest assured you haven’t made a fatal error with your money.
When the fake caller rings back, tell them you know they are a scammer and you will be reporting them to the police...see how fast they get off the phone then.

Please, it’s important that you are diligent. If you don't know the person or you don't recognise the voice of the caller as sounding like someone that you know, do NOT say yes to giving anyone any money. And never ever give out your banking details or passwords to anyone over the phone or via an email or text request just because they ask for it and 'claim you are owed or owning money.
Cheers...Max

What do you think the Australian Federal government should do, given that these scammers are in Estonia?
