$8.50 for a single bottle of water—should students really be paying this?

A simple trip to buy water turned into an eye-watering experience for one University of Melbourne student.

What should have been a quick purchase ended up sparking outrage online.

The cost? A single bottle priced at $8.50—leaving many questioning how basic necessities can reach such extremes.

A country student visiting Melbourne’s campus discovered the shocking price when they forgot their water bottle and popped into the general store.

'$9 for a bottle of water. I wonder why students are so unhappy,' the student wrote on social media, sharing a photo of the price tag.

'I'm travelling from the country and forgot my water bottle so stopped by the campus store and I couldn't believe the price. They could at least pick up some 90c bottles from Woolies at least.'

The post quickly gained traction, with fellow students calling the pricing 'criminal' and 'disgraceful.'

Many compared it to airport pricing, highlighting the absurdity of paying more than double what a bottle costs elsewhere.

To put it in perspective, the $8.50 bottle costs more than a 24-pack of 600ml water bottles from Coles ($8), multiple bottles at Melbourne Airport ($4.50 each), most soft drinks at the same campus store (Sunkist was selling for $5.95), and even a decent reusable water bottle that would last for years.

'Melbourne Airport has these for $4.50... keyword is 'airport''.

Reddit user comparison

Even stadium pricing—known for being expensive—usually doesn’t reach this level.

'I do agree $8.50 is insane, that's MCG or airplane prices,' one commenter noted.

The situation is made more frustrating by the university’s sustainability initiatives, which promote reusable bottles and reduced single-use plastic.

Staff can purchase branded reusable bottles and cups at discounted rates, while students can buy them online or from reuse vending machines on the Parkville campus [1] [2].

Yet single-use bottles remain exorbitantly priced, creating a confusing contradiction for students trying to follow sustainability guidelines.

Smart alternatives for thirsty students

  • Buy a quality reusable bottle once for under $10

  • Use the free water fountains and bubblers around campus

  • Stock up on water bottles from supermarkets before visiting campus

  • Keep a collapsible water bottle in your bag as backup

  • Consider the university's own reusable bottle vending machines

The incident underscores broader financial pressures facing Australian university students, who must balance tuition, accommodation, textbooks, and living costs.

Even minor expenses, like a single bottle of water, can quickly add up for students and their families.

Social media threads about the incident became a hub for practical solutions, with suggestions ranging from refilling soft drink bottles with tap water to investing in a reusable bottle.

'Tip out the Sunkist and refill it with tap water, save $4,' one student suggested.

Another added, 'You can get a double insulated bottle for $5. Then fill that from the bubbler.'

These workarounds highlight how students are adapting to the high costs, proving that reusable bottles are not just environmentally friendly but also financially sensible.

Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, or student, the lesson is clear: planning ahead and investing in a reusable bottle can prevent unnecessary expenses.

What This Means For You

A country student at the University of Melbourne recently discovered that single-use water bottles were selling for a staggering $8.50, sparking widespread outrage. Social media users quickly criticised the pricing as 'criminal' and drew comparisons to the inflated costs often seen at airports and stadiums.

This situation is made more confusing by the university’s sustainability efforts, which encourage the use of reusable bottles while single-use options remain prohibitively expensive. Students are now being urged to invest in reusable bottles, take advantage of campus bubblers, or bring their own water to avoid these excessive costs.

For families supporting students, this serves as a reminder that even small, everyday items can add up and impact a tight budget, highlighting the importance of planning ahead and finding practical ways to save on campus.

If the $8.50 water bottle left you shaking your head, you’re not alone.

Unexpectedly high prices pop up in all kinds of places, even somewhere as ordinary as a hotel minibar.

Here’s a story that highlights another real-life example of being charged far more than expected for a basic item.

This is almost double the price for a bottle of water. This over priced water bottle, that is supposed to be there for students, should be reported to the ACCC department. They have the power to investigate the issue of the overpriced bottles of water, to find out who has nominated this price and what is the justification for the overpricing. 🙏🦋

Try a bloody tap, that's all we had as kids
Dear member Wabcowombat, good morning. Thankyou for your post. Yes I agree with you, I can recall the rows of tap water, when we went to primary and high school. But in this day and age, students especially, University students want to have a cold bottle of water, that they can indulge in, when in class, during long hours of heavy studies, and on hot days. But yes, if $8.50 is too much to pay, freely use the water taps on campus. Have a great week. 🙏🦋

That is highway robbery. It’s cheaper to buy a beer, for goodness’ sakes.

Absolutely beyond disgraceful and needs to be stopped. It's usually an independent individual who owns the vending machines but the university should be keeping an eye on pricing on their property for their students and should have had it removed if prices weren't lowered considerably.

Campus pricing or supermarket pricing, can’t understand bottled water. We are among the best countries for good water. Just fill a water bottle, you can even get one either a filter.

use tap water it has never killed anyone yet

If any thing is an unreasonable price . DONT BUY IT. If the shop finds something is not selling the price will soon change. Look elsewhere you will find something better elsewhere. Tell yourself ... It was ment to be. jay2

Dear member Jay2 good morning. Thankyou for your post. Yes I agree with you. But when students need to remain on campus to do back to back subjects and have no time to go out of the University grounds to buy cold water, well that's when this $8.50 bottle of water price becomes an issue. Especially on those hot days when a cold bottle of water would be heaven on earth. Have a great week. 🙏🦋

what a drip of a student. take a bottle from home. you are not very clever.

Dear member Jest, thankyou for your post. The water in the University taps are not cold on hot days. Second, students want to be able to have access to a cold bottle of water in class, when then are working hard and become thirsty, on hot days. No one is dumb here as you write in your post, and we all know that there are water taps at a University. However, with respect, it appears that you seem to lack the knowledge, that you can not take a tap ino class with you on a hot day. Have a great week. 🙏🦋

Dear member Clancieblue, thankyou for your post. May I ask did you bring food from home to work or when you went to uni, or did you purchase your lunch at uni as you would most probably have enough books to carry with you anyway. Same goes with water, when I went to University, I could barely carry all the text books, in my carry bag, let alone another bottle of water to add to the weight. I am not saying the current generation are lazy, it's just that even a judge in court, a doctor or barrister would want to have access to a vending machine, that supplies a cold bottle of water on the premises of their work place. Let's not loose track of the issue here is that, someone is without a doubt, double charging for a cold bottle of water. This is not a Theme Park on the Gold Coast, or Disneyland or the amazing Dubai, where the rich come to holiday, and pay $8.50 for a bottle of water. This is a University where students are learning so hard, through the hot and could weather seasons, to be able to get employment to work for what they are qualified for. That's when an affordable cold bottle of water from a vending machine, would be much appreciated. Have a great week. 🙏🦋

Dear member [email protected], good afternoon. Thankyou for your post. I agree, but then can you take Melbourne's best tap water COLD into the class room. The issue here is about the double price of the bottle of water that is sold at University. This is a University campus, not a holiday resort. Have a great week. 🦋

Dear member Jest, yes indeed, and by the afternoon, you can enjoy your bottle of water, nice and warm, which would be great during the summer weather. Thanks for your brilliant idea. I personally don't enjoy drinking warm water during summer, that's why vending machines supply cold bottles of water. Have a great week. 🙏🦋
