My grandmother went through the same hardships... with 9 or so kids and a boarding house, and no husband, and couldn't speak English. She was the kindest most placid person you could wish to meet.

I can only imagine what her day must have been like, hard work and isolation from language barriers.
What a wonderful job she has done ,raising these children on her own. Young people today would have trouble coping with the disadvantages these people faced.
