Tragic Loss: The secret health battle that took Footloose star Lynne Marta at 78

Lynne Marta, the beloved actress known for her role in the iconic 1984 musical drama Footloose, sadly passed away at the age of 78.

Her death, which occurred on January 12 in her Los Angeles home, was confirmed by her close friend Chris Saint-Hilaire to the media.

Marta's passing comes after a long, private battle with cancer and just a week after the death of her former partner, David Soul, who starred in the TV series Starsky & Hutch.

Marta's friends and colleagues have paid tribute to the actress.

Joan Sobel, a close friend of Marta's, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, posting a picture of the actress.

'We lost a beautiful light today. My friend, Lynne Marta, lost her good fight,' Sobel said.

'A wonderfully talented actress and a beautiful singer whose voice was of the angels. A dear heart who adored her friends, both human and furry. I will miss her terribly,’ she added.

Marta's acting career spanned several decades, with her first role dating back to 1966 in the sitcom Gidget, where she starred alongside actress Sally Field.

This marked the beginning of a long and successful career in television, with guest appearances on popular shows, including Charlie’s Angels, Mod Squad, and Gunsmoke.

Her talent wasn't limited to the small screen. Marta also made her mark in the film industry, working as Elma in Clint Eastwood’s 1972 western film Joe Kidd.

However, her role as Lulu Warnicker, the aunt of Kevin Bacon’s character Ren in Footloose, truly cemented her place in Hollywood.

In addition to her acting career, Marta was also known for her beautiful singing voice, a talent often highlighted in her performances. Her final acting credit is from the 2004 TV series American Dreams.

Marta's life wasn't without its share of tragedy. In 1989, she became a key witness in the murder trial of Robert John Bardo, the man accused of shooting actress Rebecca Schaeffer, best known for the TV comedy My Sister Sam.

Marta and Schaeffer lived on the same apartment floor, and Marta heard the gunshot and the subsequent screams.

She was the one who made the 911 call. Bardo, who had stalked Schaeffer for three years, was convicted of the murder, leading to the implementation of stricter anti-stalking laws in California.

Marta's death comes just a week after the passing of her former partner, actor and singer David Soul.

Soul, 80, was best known for the 1970s police action series Starsky & Hutch and his hit songs ‘Don’t Give Up on Us Baby’ and ‘Silver Lady’. He passed away on January 4.
