removing discoloured calcium deposits in toilet bowl

Over the years the toilet bowel developed brown calium deposit discolouration under the water line which brushing made no indent. Various options were tried as per google searches & left overnight to test the suggestions. I give my rating from experience in trying options out.
In each case I used the toilet brush as a plunger to remove excess water.

  • Coca cola 1 litre for 12 hours 3/10 rating
  • Bleach 1 litre for 12 hours 5/10 rating
  • Left over small fragments of soap cakes placed in a netting (they type that keeps birds off of fruit trees) & placed in the cistern & just left there to gradually dissolve 3/10 rating
  • CLR applied with a brush after water removed from the base & left 12 hours 7/10 rating
  • Then as we were shopping my wife just happened to see Aldi Dentitex whitening denture (we don’t have dentures) cleaning Tab’s for $4.99 (96 pack) & suggested we try. Two crushed tabs in bowl nightly for 3 nights & one could see the daily improvement. Rating 10/10. Totally removed from observation.
The soap in the cistern appears to make waste material stick less & easier to clean with a bush & the bowl looks new & sparking white. So no need to purchase a new one if selling the home as that was a potential option for the future.

Conclusion – a cheap remedy that can be undertaken monthly. Using 2 tabs on a monthly maintenance program means 4 years worth of cleaning product for only $4.99. This equates to 10 cents per month (2 tab per month) & no more feeling embarrassed when visitors come over or using blue water agents to disguise. Its ½ that cost if maintenance only needs 1 tab per month. Also it saves throwing away the small leftovers of hand & shower soap. So its altogether environmentally friendly.
