Your Dose of Good News!

Good morning!
Over in SDC Rewards, we regularly take a moment to look at some ‘good news’ from around Australia and the globe. In honour of R U OK? Day, I’m sharing this week’s dose with everyone!
So, what are the best and brightest good news stories this week?
Globally:
Changi Airport has been transformed into a blooming spectacle with its first-ever flower-themed showcase from now till 30 September. ‘A Sunflower Sojourn’ features over 5,000 sunflowers of more than 10 exquisite varieties. Sunflowers have been synonymous with Changi Airport since the opening of the Sunflower Garden at Terminal 2 departure transit area in 2002. I’ve visited this garden in person and can attest to its beauty!
A school in San Francisco has become the home of a free grocery store. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School’s free grocery store is open to both students and parents of the school. Stocking fresh fruits and vegetables, meat and dairy products, the store is being backed by Amazon and a non-profit organisation called the Goodr Foundation. According to Goodr’s CEO, Marli Crowe, ‘[The students] can [now] focus on learning and not on where their next meal is coming from, and they can focus on helping their families.’
The last captive elephant at South Africa’s national zoo has been released back into the wild. Charlie the African elephant was captured in Zimbabwe as a two year old in 1984. Charlie will be supported by veterinary experts as he gets used to his new home before his planned integration into an existing elephant community.
In Australia:
In this year’s Eureka Prizes, Professor Kate Jolliffe from the University of Sydney was awarded for her research and leadership, which has ‘enhanced Australia’s standing in the relatively young field of supramolecular chemistry’. Her mentorship has resulted in more than 150 researchers being appointed to senior academic and industry roles in the field. She said: ‘When I started my research on Supramolecular Chemistry, I was the only woman in the room. That’s why I’ve dedicated the past two decades to mentoring and inspiring young female researchers…Bringing underrepresented groups into the field is essential for achieving equality in science and producing outstanding research.’
The NSW Government announced that Olympic gold medallists Jess and Noemie Fox will be honoured in Sydney with the naming of ‘Fox Island’. The artificial island is in the centre of Penrith’s Whitewater Stadium and will be on the world stage next year when the stadium hosts the Canoe and Slalom World Championships. NSW Minister for Sport Steve Kamper said: ‘There is no doubt that the Fox family are the first family of paddling in Australia. The contributions that each of them has made have lifted the sport to new heights.’
University of Queensland scientists have developed a filter to extract ‘forever chemicals’, from drinking water. The separated chemicals can then be used for renewable batteries. A team of researchers is set to begin a full trial of the filter at water treatment plants with State Government funding with hopes to reach commercial production within 3 years.

R U OK? Day
Wondering what on Earth I’m talking about when I say ‘R U OK? Day? Well, September 14th marks R U OK? Day every year here in Aus.
R U OK? is an Australian non-profit suicide prevention organisation that was founded by Gavin Larkin in 2009. It revolves around the slogan 'R U OK?' and advocates for people to have conversations with others. The reasoning? One conversation could save a life.
What to do if you or someone you know isn't okay?
This resources page has a great list of organisations available to help.
Here are a few articles by member writer and psychologist @Joy Straw that you might like to read:
GRIEF — How to Survive and Thrive
Ask Joy: DO I NEED THERAPY or better still do I want therapy?
Ask Joy: Depression Versus Sadness
Ask Joy: When Feelings are Overwhelming You
What is the SDC team doing for the occasion? We’ll be going for a team walk and grabbing a little pastry treat from a bakery. Most importantly, we’ll be asking one another ‘are you okay?’
Take care of yourself and take it easy, members.
Much love!
