Whitening your sand shoes

Who remembers the Friday night ritual of whitening your sand shoes? For some of us, Saturday mornings meant tennis matches and kids would gear up for the weekend by getting their sand shoes and black school shoes in tip-top shape. They would spread out newspapers to avoid polish disasters, carefully apply whitener to those worn-out sneakers, and meticulously polish the school shoes to shiny perfection. Oh, the sweet scent of freshly polished footwear! Do you have fond memories of this Friday night ritual?

I was only looking about a month ago if and where I could buy this whitener but to no avail. It definitely lengthened the use of your shoes and also looked good at the same time. This is also true for any other shoes that you have.

I do remember this and having to scrub the shoe laces too which always seemed to develop black marks on them! Keeping sand shoes and school shoes - black leather was a ritual. We weren't allowed to wear anything else. Kids these days have a big choice of shoes and colours and styles. I remember my school uniform was a plain grey dress, black shoes and grey ankle socks. It was a bit uninspiring!

Have you tried Mr Minit etc in shopping centres? They seem to have a big range of shoe polishes and cleaners.

Having super white sandshoes was a sure sign you were a goody goody. Sure I would have to clean them but then on sports day, on the way to school, I would deliberately scuff them as much as possible.

I loved the job of whitening my sand shoes. It always made me feel happy to see them clean and bright white l was a sporty child so got to do this a lot. I didn’t like the black sponge. Black nugget polish was much better.

we used to call the 'keds' back in India. used to whiten them by rubbing white chalk on them!!! Did the trick.

Wow what a memory, whitening my plimsolls and polishing my school shoes all shiny for Monday morning. Getting my hands dirty and smeared with the whitening or the shoe polish. Those were the days

Thanks, Annette.

Thanks, Annette. There isn't a Mr Minit where I live but if I am ever in a shopping centre I will keep a lookout for them. Have a great day.
