Remember the sound of a switchboard operator connecting your call? Before automatic dialling took over, every call went through a telephonist, often greeting you with a friendly voice as they connected your line. Yes remember it well, as a junior in the office I had to work every second Saturday morning on the switchboard, or the teleprinter. Thru the week worked as the Purchasing Officers typist. Those were the days when we were multi skilled!!

My Grandfather was in charge of the switchboard room at Sydney GPO for a number of years. I have a photo of him in the switch room in suit and collar and tie.

oh yes, 16 years old and working at Mangrovite Industries at Lane Cove. Just one of the many things done by multi skilled people of those days.
