Safety concerns have been raised among female tourists planning to visit the famed Balinese tourist hotspot, Pura Tirta Empul.
The sacred water temple is renowned for its historical relevance and the Melukat ceremony, which symbolises the purification of the body, both physically and spiritually, through bathing in holy water.
However, the recent happenings have led individuals to question the degree of privacy they can expect at such places.
On the 2nd of September, a woman named Ninda claimed to have been unknowingly filmed in the women's changing room after partaking in the sacred cleansing ritual called Melukat ceremony. She brought the incident to light through social media.
According to local reports, Ninda mentioned that while changing her clothes post-ceremony, she noticed someone pointing a mobile phone towards her in the women’s changing room of the busy temple. Reacting instantly, she screamed and attempted to chase the alleged voyeur. However, she was unsuccessful.
Ninda explicitly cautioned in her video: 'Guys, especially girls, please be vigilant and look around before changing your clothes after Melukat.'
Since the video clip’s release, viewership has surpassed 500,000 views. It has elicited hundreds of comments, primarily gratitude to Ninda for bringing attention to the situation and some expressing shared privacy concerns at the temple.
Many women revealed they're also scared of changing there because the area is 'so open'.
'Thank you for speaking up,' one said.
'Hopefully, the relevant parties can fix this incident,' another added.
'Hopefully, something like this doesn’t happen again,' a third commented, adding that security should be tightened in the area.
The incident incited the authorities to respond.
The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, called for an investigation and expressed, 'If this incident is indeed proven to be true, appropriate sanctions should be imposed on the individual responsible for recording'.
In response to the incident, the temple has taken measures to ensure visitors' safety, promising to install more CCTV cameras to deter such behaviour. Tampaksiring Police have confirmed that they are conducting an investigation and have already interviewed Ninda and a photographer working at the tourist hotspot.
