Golden Syrup In A Tin

I remember when Golden Syrup came in a large Tin that you had to prise open with a knife.
You would always need to find somewhere to place the lid.

Not only was it a much needed ingredient in Anzac biscuits it was also amazing on a piece of buttered toast.

I remember my grandfather using it in his porridge after he had poured in the milk saying ' drown the Miller ' no idea why he used to say that

drown the Miller ?????
My mum had some funny expressions ...
If she caught you scratching ya bum - butter was going to be cheaper.
If you pulled a funny face - be careful the wind might change.
If you shivered - that happens when somebody walks over your grave.

Anybody else got funny mum saying?

My nan used to say when she shivered that someone just walked over her grave. My grandfather was Irush so maybe a Celtic thing with drown the miller

Google says: To put too much water into grog or tea.
The idea is that the supply of water is so great that even the miller, who uses a water wheel, is drowned with it.

An old expression much used by sailors in the Royal Navy during the days of sail to indicate that more than the statutory amount of water had been mixed with the rum in the daily ration of grog. The statutory mixture was three parts of water to one part of rum, but some pursers were tempted to ‘drown the miller’ to make the rum go further, pocketing the difference in value.

Loved golden syrup or treacle on my porridge as a kid. I used to sneak a teaspoonful of either after school as we could to afford lollies like most of the neighbourhood kids.
