Coles and Woolworths announce significant price drop on Christmas staple

In the midst of the festive season, supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have delivered an early Christmas gift to shoppers by announcing a surprising price drop on a beloved holiday staple.

As families across the country begin to plan their Christmas feasts, the two retailers have made a commitment to affordability that's sure to bring cheer to many.

Coles and Woolworths have declared that they will hold the line on the price of their half-leg Christmas hams, offering them at the same budget-friendly rate as last year.

This means that Coles customers can look forward to their Single Smoked Beechwood Half-Leg Ham, and Woolworths patrons can relish their award-winning Half-Leg Ham, both priced at $8 per kilogram.

Tim Dudding, Woolworths Director of Meat, Poultry and Seafood, expressed the importance of the ham to Australian festivities, stating, 'We know that the Woolworths Half Leg Ham is a centrepiece on countless Christmas tables, with over half a million Australian families choosing it last year.'

'This ham isn’t just a holiday tradition—it’s an award-winning customer favourite, renowned for its quality and flavour. That’s why we’re pleased to offer it again this year at the same great price as last year of $8 per kilo,’ he continued.

Coles has also emphasised the value they're providing to customers.

Coles’ Brand Development Chef, Michael Weldon, highlighted the affordability of their offering: 'At $1.50 per serve, our 100 per cent Australian and sow stall-free Single Smoked Beechwood Ham is a classic Christmas Day staple.'

This announcement is particularly noteworthy given the recent allegations of price gouging levelled against both Coles and Woolworths.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has taken legal action against the supermarket chains, accusing them of misleading customers with deceptive pricing practices, such as artificially inflating prices before offering discounts.

Coles reduced its ham price from $8.50 per kilogram last year, marking its lowest price since 2019. Woolworths also cut its price from $8.50, claiming this to be its lowest price since 2014.

But the good news doesn't stop there. Both supermarkets have unveiled their Christmas menus, packed with a variety of festive products to suit every palate.

Woolworths' Christmas menu boasts a delightful mix of new and returning items, including a Biscoff Trifle, Macro Chicken Roast with Honey, Macadamia and Orange stuffing, and the much-loved Gold Davidson Plum & Gin Tarts and Pavlova Wreath with Daintree Vanilla.

Coles, on the other hand, has launched over 90 Christmas items, with highlights such as Reindeer Bao Buns and a Toffee, Date and Ginger Pudding.

They are possibly last years stock that didn't sell and they bought them from farmers at last years prices...

So, who are they ripping off instead, the farmer?
Coles and Woolworths have probably negotiated a deal with the company that processes their smallgoods products.....the processor does their own brand products too
